Extended Honda warranty for new Fit?

I have until I pick up my car on Wednesday to get the "Honda Plus" Canadian warranty or not. The "most common" coverage costs $800 + tax and covers 6 years/100,000 km.

Now, like most people I scoff at extended warranties and know they're a big cash cow for dealerships, but my dad's Neon had its A/C fail literally weeks out of regular warranty, and cost between $1000-$2000 to fix.

Murphy's Law... never need it if you have it, wish you had it when you don't...

Obviously all NorthAm Fits are still under warranty, but what are your opinions about extended warranties on cars, and specifically Honda ones?

I just bought my Fit today and I refused the extended warranty. As a mechanic I know these programs to be a waste of money.
I also refused the rust proofing, undercoating, paint protection ect.

I *accidently* got the extended warranty and I regret sooo damn much, tried to get money back but then the dealership being a dick about it. I almost want to kick that asshole's ass.

do NOT get any extended warranty, under ANY conditions.

ricohman, you skipped the dealer rustproofing, but what about annual rustproofing from say Krown, which I've heard good things about? Where I live they use a *lot* of road salt in the winter.

I bought the extra 10 years/100,000 mile warrantee.

Sometimes i regret it,but sometimes when i read about a something that went bad and its past 30,000 miles i feel good about buying it.

My last car (2002 Civic) had the 100,000 mile extended warranty. I ended up using it when my power window stopped working, and my gas door cable snapped. At 70K miles it was nice to just bring the car into the dealership and have them fix it for free.

So I ended up buying the warranty for my Fit too.

I have been restoring FJ40's and other small imports for 20 years now and I have learned much about vehicle construction and rust proofing.
If you feel you need to rust proof the inside of your doors and the hard points on the underside you can do it yourself for about $75.
I am not doing anything besides some Mothers wax/treatment every 4 months and I am extremely picky about my vehicles.
They use salt in Saskatchewan also.

Consumer Reports did an excellent expose of the 'extended warranty' recently that you just might want vto read.

Why do I need to read that?
As a mechanic, I will handle all repairs out of warranty.
I will save my $1000 Canadian. Maybe buy more beer.......

Thanks for the info on rustproofing, ricohman; I hadn't realized you lived in Canada too.

I'm still undecided on the extended warranty; opinions here are 50/50.

I'm not a mechanic, though I wouldn't mind learning to repair cars myself. That's the problem with getting your first car new though; I wouldn't hesitate (much) experimenting on an older, used car, but I'm leery of tinkering with my new Fit.

By the time it needs repairs, it will be far from new!
