09 or 07-08?

09 or 07-08?
I love the fact that in the states our 07-08 Honda Fit is like a white whale. I never like to drive a car that everyone else has, and the rarity of the Fit makes me happy.
I was wondering what you guys think about the new 09 Fit. How it looks, the idea of making it slightly larger but adding some power. Personally I like our body style and am happy that they are coming out with a new Fit so that there wont be as many of ours. I just wish we could have the option of the huge glass top that I saw on a 09 Fit.
Just let me know what you think.

If you like rare go with the 07-08 model, only on sale for 2 years and for the majority of that time they were hard to find. 09 will flood the market and sell like crazy(at least i think). Plus the 09 is ugly as heck IMO.

I decided to go with an '08 Sport instead of waiting till the '09's come out because I just don't like the look of the '09 as much. Plus, I do like that the '07-08 is more rare and stands out a little bit.
I will miss my sunroof though

i was gonna wait for the 09's to come out this september.. but i went with the 08' instead.
and i agree... like right now.. in like a week, i probably see like 2 fits on the road... maybe 3 max.. but that's it.. there so hard to find on the streets.
and i drive like 50 miles everyday back and forth to work from home

I completely agree with what's said here. We who have bought '07/'08s are driving classics in the making. I could have waited and gotten an '09, but
(a) the first-gen is better looking;
(b) there will inevitably be some bugs in the new model;
(c) I wanted a car that isn't just like everybody else's, and I agree with Tyler that Honda will be selling tons of '09s.

I keep hearing this tidbit of wishful thinking and don't see it happening. I have a hard time naming a single Japanese-made econobox that would be considered a "classic" outside of its car club/internet discussion-group following.
The closest I can come to some would be the Datsun 510 and maybe a few select CRX or Civic models. The original 91/92 Nissan Sentra SE-R was very highly praised when it came out but I wouldn't say it has become a classic outside of the SE-R afficionados.
Even if you expand it to all makes of compact econo cars, you might could include the original VW Beetle and Rabbit/GTI, the original Mini Cooper, the BMW 2002 (not really a budget car), and some really rare stuff like the Dodge Omni GLH-S, Neon ACR, etc.
The Fit is a great little car, but I don't see it offering anything grounbreaking in terms of performance (or performance for the $), racing history, styling, cuteness or lust-factor. It also isn't extremely rare or so common that everyone will have memories about their parents or friend who had a Fit (like people have for classic Beetles and Mustangs).

I like the '09 better. The styling is cleaner with better integrated aero bits on the RS/Sport. The execution is more understated/euro looking. It'll be interesting to see if, as claimed, they've improved the ride while keeping the handling liveliness. A slightly taller 5th gear in the 5MT would be nice, but I haven't heard anything about that yet. The interior of the '09 looks a bit more upscale as well and it sounds like they've refined the Magic Seat operation. Basically it sounds like they've addresses most of the complaints of the first generation. If true, the growing popularity of subcompacts combined with an improved offering from Honda should equate to increased sales assuming Honda has the production capacity to meet demand.

I do agree with lots of what you said. They have increased the quality of the interior, and the added length and width to the wheel base should make the ride a bit more forgiving. I just don't know if I like the rounded out look that the 09 seems to have, and I think the added weight to the vehicle and slight increase in power from the 1.5L will lower the fuel economy. Thanks for your input on the post, and its ok if people like the 09 more than the 07-08 because its still a Fit after all.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines a "classic" as "One that is of the highest rank or class: The car was a classic of automotive design." In my opinion, the first-generation Fit is of the highest rank or class among subcompact automobiles; it is a very handsome car that superbly fulfills its design function. To me, it is a classic from that standpoint. And the fact that the '07-'08 is not a hugely abundant car, as the first post points out, means that it will have a certain cachet which many more popular cars will never have.
I don't know that I'd call it a white whale, though! (In any case, mine is Milano Red.)
