My Lower Back is KILLING me!
#22
Not near as bad as mentioned but just this year after swapping from Suburban I now have mild lower back pain.
IMHO It's the total lack of lumbar support. I took one long trip from West Palm to Gainesville and rolled up a towel and placed in as lumbar support would be and it was much better.
Thanks Honda

Low back pain can be the lumbar support (or lack of) but it can also be too much pressure on the back of your thighs, in which case you could try sitting on a piece of foam (inch and a half maybe?) just under your butt, but not your legs - sometimes that can help. And sitting fairly straight up is a good idea. I see so many guys driving around leaning way back which trashes your low back and also your neck.
If you have something like a herniated disk, you're going to be in pain a lot more than just when you drive long trips. I doubt that's the problem.

Tush-Cush
I swear by this thing:
Tush Cush - 1-800-451-6206
Not sure if it would help you, but something to consider.

I feel your pain on the sucky seats. To my surprise, I bought a seat chushion from Target and it solved my back pain issues. The seat cushion is made by HoMedics and was $19.99. HoMedics Mobile Comfort Memory Foam Seat - Gray : Target

I tried to take a pic but too confined space for my aching knees. Like I said it is a U-shaped piece of carpet foam that I cut out to "Fill in" the gap on either side of the middle lumbar part, Sort of a U with a flat btm. and about half way up on either side.
These bucket seats were designed for smaller backsides than mine and even the side lips are annoying esp. coming from an '86 Olds bench seat.
I think the 2009 has a flat back and wider tapered sides.

That for sure would resolve an issue the I noticed the 1st time I sat in one. I'd say anyone over 180lbs has to notice that too close feeling.

I had a 2002 Civic Si that I thought was the cause of my back problem. I ended up trading on an Element, not totally for the back but it was a big consideration.
Suffice to say that 8 months later, I ended up with a microdiskectomy and partial laminectomy. My back was f'd and it wasn't from the seat. The seat was like the Cap'n Crunch Magic Decoder Pen...it helped me discover the issue. I had a badly herniated L4/L5 that was all blown apart by the time I seeked out help.
4 years later and I still feel great, 99.9999% of the time. I have put 60k on my Fit without any issues.

My lower back doesn't touch the seat and this thing may help, but it is a bit pricey!

Aftermarket dead pedal allows you to push backward in the seat, but for most of us seat is too short (no thigh support). Lumbar support cushions on the back rest are aligning your spine better and getting you off the tail bone, but again, there is that lack of thigh support!
Sjwoo's suggested cushion is good, but I would rotate it 180* to a point where thin side is under your tail bone and thick end is supporting your thighs! Willmax11's idea of adding something under a carpet to allow you resting your heels while touching pedal is great, too. This way your feet and thighs are not in mid air and your weight is resting on your thighs beside your butt/tail bone.
I do not think that one single thing will help, but combination of multiples.
Unless steering wheel can come 2-3" closer to our chest. Then everything would be perfect.
