JDM Map Light Install w/ Pics

I just wrapped up this install today. I found the perfect Molex connector at Fry's to fit in the map light but when installing it I accidentally broke one of the clips on the map light so that pushed me over the edge and I went about making a piece to mount the light to.

I found a 3/4"x3/4"x6" piece of wood (trim piece or something) at Home Depot and attached it to the roof with some heavy duty double sided tape. Then I screwed into that with some wood screws... pics are here:

Also, if anyone else plans on doing this, I had to push that foam piece over about a half inch and it was almost too much in the way to work with. If you cut your hole a little bit further away from the rearview mirror than I did you will miss it entirely and have an easier install.

UPDATE: The Fit I did this mod on was totaled and I've had the chance to do the install again on my new Fit. Do not bother with the double-sided tape and the piece of wood. As long as you miss that foam piece and don't cut the hole too large the map light fits perfectly snug without it.

Looks like a clean install, nice work. Where did you tap into the power? The Dome light or ran the cable down the a-pillar?

I tapped the power from the Dome light, and attached the ground wire to the rearview mirror as I saw in an earlier thread of someone else's install.

Thanks for the comments!

Where'd you get the maplight? I wanna do this with an Element maplight (as it's the same as the JDM Fit maplight), but have been wary of how to mount it...and spend ~$40 fo it all, too. Hmm...subscribed for interest.

I actually got my map light on ebay used for $20 shipped. The rest of the stuff ended up costing about $15 all together.

Before I anchored the light down, it was really not up to snuff... it didn't sit nearly flush enough for my taste but after screwing it in it's perfect. The double-sided tape holds very well just make sure you use a heavy duty one.

One thing, though.. if anyone wants to install the JDM roof console I believe it is obstructed by this type of map light install. If you plan on installing the roof console you could make 2 separate mounting blocks and leave space inbetween for the console bracket.
