OMG How many time will this come up. Easy Facts:

Higher octane is Harder to burn. It is a slow burn fuel. That is why it is used on high compression or boosted engines.

If you run a high octane fuel in our car not only will in not give you more power but it can possibly rob power due to the fact that it burns slower.

I would love to see a dyno chart on a non high compression engine showing any gains on prem fuel.

"use the recommended fuel" well... hate to break it to ya but it says 87 OR HIGHER! The minimum fuel grade in countries that still use the L series engines is 97RON, or 91AKI. Using it won't hurt a thing and actually help your engine to run smoother and better. I don't understand why people have no trouble paying 5 bucks a quart for oil but argue over 20 cents per gallon in gas, JUST USE THE BEST. You are driving a car from the world's premier engine manufacturer, the least you can do is feed it what it deserves and was designed to run on. This engine was designed and built in Japan, using Japanese grade gas. They don't have 87AKI there last time I checked!

but its not a japanese motor... that would make a difference... i run 91 but im thinking of running 87 starting tonight because 1 gas prices are stupid and 2 ive never tried it. but i guess all this shit would make sense if we all just tried changing it to see what happens. i care about my motor even though its about the size of a lawn mower, and i want the best for it. compression is 10.4:1 in my book i think thats pretty high for a stock motor. seeing how my type r was 11.3:1. i love these arguments its great.

oh ps. does running lower octane boost gas mileage in this car?? cuz i am getting about 24 miles to the gallon and i know i do a lot of driving and my freeway miles are on the toll road which has a lot of big ass hills so i know that kills it but id love to know

I stick with 87...for money reasons and if Honda says its good then its good..lol. Always shop with Chevron, got that techron stuff no matter which oct level you choose. Seem to get the best overall performance from Chevron's gas.

YOU WILL NOT GET ANYTHING MORE OUT OF YOUR FIT WITH MORE THAN 87 OCTANE.

other cars, though, like my brother's del sol VTEC, NEED 91 octane. just based on the engine.

THE HONDA FIT DOESN'T NEED MORE THAN 87, ANYTHING MORE, AND YOU'RE THROWING YOUR MONEY AWAY!!

Jeez, between registration, insurance, carwashes, maintenance, and garage space rent... GAS is the LEAST expensive thing about owning this car. Does it really matter whether you pay $30 a tank or $33? I say go with the best gas you can.

Higher octane fuel is not "Better" it is just different in knock prevention specifications.

I've had a Dodge Caliber since September 2006. Would have bought a Honda Fit if they had come out with a CVT...but Honda didn't.

Anyway, I take careful MPG notes, & I'm not getting the MPG rise this year like I did last year, after the switch from lower energy winter mix gasoline to higher energy summer mix gasoline. I'm waiting for others who keep careful MPG records to say the same thing. It could be my individual car, but I don't think so.

My recent winter MPG didn't drop this year like it did last year. I was wondering if my car might be having a late break-in period & was waiting for a great rise in my MPG beginning in March. But the rise never came.

You will only get more power if the engine is mapped for it. And the Fit isn't.
As a mechanic for the last 21 years I have dyno charts for various stock motorcycles.
My ZX-11 which I still own, develops 6 more hp on 87.
And this engine cannot advance the spark to take advantage of higher grade fuel, and it is a high comp motor.
Wasting money on 91 makes no sense.

I own a 03 Accord V6 6speed MT that will over time advance the timing and add 10 hp using 89 insted of 87. This is a fact per Honda. Other Hondas I have owned did not do that and ran better on 87.
Does anyone really know about the Fit's knock sensor's ability to adjust?

Octane rating has NOTHING to do *burns cleaner*, at least for most fuel.

Octane is a rating to measure how *well* can the fuel to resist pre-ignition.

Oil companies has been very successful in their advertisements, they got people to believe that Octane rating has something to do with *burns* cleaner*.

There are a few exception case like Shell V-power & Chevron's Techron. These 2 company put some special blend of engine detergent into their premium gasoline. Shell's Mid and Regular grade gasoline has 2 times the federal cleaning agents requirements. (but couple years ago the government cut the requirements in 1/2 so its same thing actually) and Chervon has Techron in all their gas, just the matter of *how much*, Premium has the most of course.

EVEN with special *v-power/Techron* gas its still NOT enough to keep dirt away from engine, you still have to do your own maintenance.

But is it *worth it to* use the Premium gas I've mention just to keep the carbon away? Answer is no.

Think of it, the money you save, like what, lets say 2 bux a tank, in 5 tanks you should have more than enough money to get some very good System cleaner like Redline SI-1. and a few more tanks you can buy yourself another tank of gas. why not ?

So if your engine is designed to use 87, use 87. Anything higher is just a waste of money
