Towing with a Fit

Towing with a Fit
Looking at a cross-country move. I don't have a lot of stuff to bring with me, but there's no way that I'm fitting a twin mattress in the Fit. The first thing which came to mind was a small U-Haul trailer.
The key question: Has anyone tried towing with a Fit before?

For what it would cost to get a trailer hitch and rent a trailer, you could buy a nice new twin mattress. I know that's not exactly what you were asking, but from a pragmatic point of view, that's what I would do in that situation. (That's not even taking into account added fuel cost and wear & tear on the vehicle).

Another issue is I think UHaul's smallest trailer is for local use only and is something like 700 pounds emtpy. While the Fit would pull that, once you start loading it you'd get into questionable territory fast. And I don't know if a twin matress would Fit in that size trailer. A larger trailer would be be too heavy empty, much less loaded up.

I pulled a small U-haul with my Neon from Florida to Illinois. Twice. I easily had 500-700lbs of stuff in it. This was well over the Neon's 1,000lb tow rating. It did fine.
I'll bet that the Fit would have no trouble pulling U-haul's smallest trailer with only a mattress inside provided the driver kept it down to 55mph and didn't leadfoot it over hills.

I don't think I would tempt it. Could you rent an actual Uhaul, drive it to and fro and then return it, and take the Fit back with you? That would be expensive though.
Sorry, that's all I got right now.

The fit is designed to load up to 850 lbs inside the vehicle.
teh users manual strongly warns against hauling anything and the possible void of warranty if done.
its not impossible; far from it.
but the average person wouldnt be able to protect from strut damage, and an unwanted bottom out.
in short. dont do it. you wouldnt tow a trailer with a mini cooper would you? (not that the fit is even close but still )

US has much stricter towing laws than most countries due the overall lack of driving skills. In europe the use small cars to tow caravans all the time. But they also have to take courses for towing. So they know that they have to drive slower ad allow for much longer braking distances.

This is true...I would think that the fit having more hp in the us version could tow at least a couple thousand pounds.....Im gonna use mine to tow my 17ft runabout boat to the lake this summer.

uhaul truck and trailer options
however, the FIT is to low to properly fit and uhaul suggested 2X4s and curbs to load.
I am planning on moving soon and I was doing to uhaul and tow, but decide to do separate trips, cause I wanna drive my FIT across a couple states.
But on topic, I agree with just buying a new mattress. sell the old one.

...Dam# Pikies !!!!!! lol.
I agree with the first suggestion. Buy a new mattress for cheaper than it would cost to get it to the destination. (tow hitches are expensive, adn it gets pricey taking a U-Haul any long distances)

Mini Cooper Towing & Hauling | Hidden Trailer Receiver Hitch | MiniDoMore.com
200 pound hitch weight and 1400 pound tow capacity. These 2500+ pound, 100+ hp lumps of metal we drive around, even the smallest ones, are capable of much more than most people give them credit for.

Good Luck.
PS don't fail to tie them down VERY WELL.
