Clutch Problems?

Mine chatters for the first start or two after sitting in a parking lot all day after a rain.

yah, you probably have to give it a tad more rpm when you engage.
should be fine though. mine does that too when my rpm's too low,
or i engage a tad too early. with different shoes the sweat spot
keep changing so the first 1-2 engagements are a tad rough.

It seems to be whenever its cold or raining/snowing. Once it warms up, it doesn't seem to do that anymore. I just want to make sure that its "Normal" and that I don't have to bring it in for service. What do you guys recommend?

My clutch sometimes chatters a tiny bit, but only the first time or two I start in reverse or 1st gear when the car is cold. Once it warms up, it never does it... Probably just normal for the car. I purchased my car used with 45,000 miles or so; the clutch was replaced immediately before I purchased the car, so it's not a wear issue with the clutch.

yeah i noticed i was getting that clutch shudder/chatter starting in first too. but i found out that if i just get the rpm a little higher before i engage the clutch, the problem is solved. try giving that a shot.

On the fire wall, low down, hidden behind the battery, (page 12-3 of the manual) you will find a hydraulic damper. From what my Honda dealer tells me, after receiving a reply to his question (mine !) from Honda Japan, because Honda Canada didn't know, it is there to stop surging in the hydraulics. It seems to be some sort of a restriction plate having holes in it that slows the fluid movement, thus "damping" the clutch operation. Apparently other Hondas have similar devices although they may be part of the master or slave cylinders and not independent devices like on the existing Fit. I doubt that the same thing will be on the new Fit. It would seem to me to be much simpler to incorporate it it into the slave or master. The presence of this thing may explain why sometimes when I clutch there is not a complete disengagement and when I shift I can feel the synchros sliding first out of 1st and then into 2nd, no gear crunching, just this funny sliding feeling. I wonder if tuners remove this thing. I do not appreciate it. Cannot understand why it is necessary. Comments of others would be much appreciated.

Google for "clutch delay valve" you'll find lots of discussion on why they're there and why they should be removed. It appears the restriction is there to keep an inexperienced driver from engaging the clutch too fast.

Thanks for the reference. Most enlightening. When is someone going to come up with a device to eliminate this thing?
I thought something was sluggish when I was changing gears. Now I know it wasn't my imagination.

Clutch Chatter
I'll buy a beer for anyone who can figure out this friggin' chattering. It's really annoying. I drive mostly around town for short distances, so I have to deal with quite a bit. It's not "normal" for any car, especially a Honda, to do this.
The Fit is a great car, but the clutch and shift mechanism seem clunky.

As a mechanic I have to say any clutch chatter is not normal.
Anyway, my car is unaffected but since all I do is drive the damn thing I would guess that the symptoms are related to dis/engaging the clutch.
If the Fit is a hydro slave then there is some fluid not releasing. On most hydro units the fluid level rises when wear occurs.
But on these low mile cars this makes no sense.

Chatter
It only does it when the drivetrain is cold. It seems like the hydraulic system could be the cause of the problem somehow.
I've had a chattering clutch due to oil on the clutch, and it just chattered all the time, not just when the car was cold.
I plan on taking the car back to Honda and making them look at it again.
