The Japanese fuel economy scale of 10-15 Mode is totally unrealistic. With EPA you have actually a chance to match or even exceed EPA in real life given the right ingredients, but with the Japanese mode, it is in the realm of fiction. Drivers in Japan can get maybe 80% of the rated fuel economy on a very good day on a very good stretch of the road. Don't even think about any mileage figure that comes out of the official Japanese mode as anything real. No one over there does.

The new 1.5 (and 1.3 which we won't get here) are using i-VTEC instead of i-DSI. Makes for better performance and economy. There are a number of other improvements. You can read about it here:

Honda L-Series SOHC i-VTEC Engines for the new GD Honda Fit/Jazz

I don't think 46mpg is very realistic either, but if I can average 40mpg with granny-mode driving I'll be quite pleased!

Great link, thanks! My new (653 miles on the clock) 2008 5-speed Sport delivered 45.48 mpg this afternoon, with a 3.98 gallon fill-up after 181 miles. My driving is rural near the panhandle of WV, most trips a minimum of 55 miles roundtrip. Heavy use of the cruise control (set at 58) certainly helps, with fuel mileage and avoiding big dollar speeding tickets in VA. The vehicle is certainly capable of 46 mpg.

That new engine sounds pretty promising.

I smell a head and ecu swap.

Wow, that's really impressive for the first generation!

Can't wait for the new model. Wish they would hurry up and release it already. 50mpg possible?!?

Sure hope so. Gas going to be $4+ soon.

Are they using the same gas that comes out of the Arco down the street from me? I don't think so. Also, air quality where I live isn't as good as other places. That's basically the same thing they said about the 07 fit. Honda might've been lazy and took the figures from the 1.2L engine instead doing the actual test.

The EPA tests over here, where the air quality and fuel type is the closer to what we experience. Also, the EPA also includes stop/go situations within the test. I get about 26.6 MPG on city driving with my fit, with is very close to the EPA estimate. And I live in a pretty smog dense area.

I still believe 50 mpg can be achieved if you ride 40 mpg without stopping.

In japan, they have less safety standards so the cars are lighter.

Remember that the currnet fit gets 45mpg over there. It dropped a lot b/c of the additional weight.

No, it doesn't. Everyone - just disabuse yourself of wanting to treat the Japanese 10-15 fuel efficiency numbers as anything real. No one attains them, and in Japan, no one takes those numbers seriously. Until the Japanese government institutes a new standard called JC08, the numbers you see, including the Fit's, should be treated as being measured under zero gravity.

JDM Fit does not have a Sport trim, nor an AT (they use CVT). There are a total of seven (7) trims, which consists actually of three (3) distinct trims which are subdivided into FWD and AWD, with the RS having three subtrims of MT, CVT, and AWD with CVT.

An RS FWD with MT would be a good one to pick, as it seems closest to the NA Sport MT. According to an official Honda publication, it weighs 2,335 pounds. The FWD CVT version adds 44 pounds.

Notice the big difference in performance on the home page of fitfreak.net? NA fits makes 0-62 mph about 8.3 sec. Jazz, makes 0-62 mph in about 11.3 sec. Big difference there. And a big difference in fuel economy too.

I wish I can import a CVT for side street driving. It'll be nice to get the 35 MPG on city driving out of the fit.

I am 99% sure the 09 US Fit also gets a different transmission, correcting the terrible 5th gear ratio we have now.

If i recall correctly, the CVT had clutch or torque converter problems in japan and/or UK. That's my only guess why it never made it to US.
