OutFITting my new Fit
Hi everyone. I just purchased a 2008 Fit Sport MT in vivid blue pearl. I got it home, paranoid of a highway rock hitting the windshield or hood. My hope is to get some 3m protective clear film (or similar) on the hood- I welcome recommendations.
Also I got it pretty bare - no floormats, even, though I have picked up a small mud mat for temporary use. I will probably buy through college hills honda as some other sites don't have all the stuff I'm looking for. Here's my wish list and if you all have any cautionary tales about any of them I'd love to know.

I will probably buy through college hills honda as some other sites don't have all the stuff I'm looking for. Here's my wish list and if you all have any cautionary tales about any of them I'd love to know.
- Floormats - the OEM standard fuzzy kind. I'll probably use a mudmat over top of the one on the driver's side, even though they say not to. My experience is that the driver's side mat wears quickly, exp. with a manual, and the other mats, hardly at all b/c foot movement is minimal compared to what the driver is doing.
- Cargo net - I figured I could find one of these at Advance Auto Parts or Autozone, etc., but at least online, I only find them for trucks. Maybe I'm using the wrong keyword, or maybe they don't have all their stuff indexed well. Anyway, if I can't find it locally, I may just get the Honda one, because I often shop and those little plastic bags flop around quite a bit.
- Wheel locks - worthwhile given the alloy wheels? I've never had alloy wheels before.
- Locking gas cap - worthwhile? I don't recall the last car I had that didn't at least have a fuel door that you had to open from inside. Seems spendy compared to what is in the stores, but I can't find a fit-friendly one in the stores, not yet anyway.
- Cargo tray - while I admire the DIY folks here who bought material at HD and cut to size, it seems to me the Honda one not only saves that effort, but is very light weight as well. My wife has one in her Accord and it is featherweight.
- Cargo cover - same idea. I want to keep prying eyes out, as well as some of the direct sunlight off say cold groceries etc. Stuff that would get hot in a car tends to stay cool longer in trunks - at least, that's my experience with my Camry. So I think I'll get the cover too.
- Bumper Applique - I probably will skip this. The only time I marred my Camry bumper in 12.5 yrs was using a Saris Bones bike rack. No matter how good the padding, the contact and vibration eventually mars the clearcoat if not the paint as well. I now just use a beach towel draped over the sill and lay my bike flat in there like a pancake. I figure it will work about as well with the Fit too.

About the rock chips..The Fit has a really slanted down hood so to fully protect it you would need to cover all the way up to the windshield..Also the mirrors are BIG on the car and rock chip prone so it would be smart to do those aswell..I got quoted 750$ which is way too much for me so i paseed. Then i bought a "Nose mask" from Honda and it kinda looked funky and it only covered half of my hood so i returned that back to Honda..So i have nothing on my Fits front and i have 3 small barely noticable rock chips..1 in the hood, 1 on the bumper, 1 on my passenger side mirror.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Do they make front-end clear masks that go all the way up to the wipers? I've seen ones but they only seem to go halfway, or even a bit less.
I hate rust - having lived in MI, CT, MA, and NY, so I'm kind of paranoid about it. I suspect the side mirrors are plastic underneath the paint, so I don't worry about them. The hood - I do worry about.
My '88 Civic had a few body flaws - lights regularly leaked moisture/water, and the sheet metal in the trunk area was so lightly coated with paint it began rusting after not long.
My Camry was at another price point and I haven't had even the hint of rust - but it is garaged too, and in the South. So that probably helped as well. But it was better put together than the Civic, even if it is boring to drive.

Yeah im sure you could have a shop, put a clear bra all the way to the windshield.. The place i went to said it would be "Hard" to do it on the Fit so they said 750$..I thought about and then said, that could be a nice set of rims on the future and passed..If i had bought a BMW 335i and spent 50k on my car the i would shell out the 750$ no problem..About rust, i havent had my one small chip on my hood rust yet..Hopefully it wont, but you could always touch up with some touch paint from your dealer before it starts to rust!

well i can vouch for the wheel locks and the locking gas cap. i think a little extra security is always better than nothing (especially since people in a neighborhood i park in a lot were putting milk in people's gas tanks).
i also have the rear bumper applique, which i think looks pretty decent and was easy to put on. however, there's always this:
Honda Fit Stainless Steel Rear Bumper Cover - FIT_RBC_ZP
personally i think this looks way better than the applique, but i didn't see it before i ordered mine. oh well, as long as i've got something on there, i'm good.

About our gas caps.. does anyone have a clue as to why Honda didn't either give us a locking gas cap standard or some type of lever to pull inside the car to open the fuel door? Did it really save that much $? It's really a bad idea, especially these days.

I also hate trucks on the highway!
As for floor mats, I'd go with all-season. They're much more durable.

the ll waether mats are great... have them in my Fit and the family has had them in every honda we have had as long as I can remember... they are great for keeping the carpeting clean... and on another note... i def. recomend locking gas cap and wheel locks.. they are cheap and easy to put on... and not having that extra security could be very very costly

OK, I just ordered the carpet mats (which I'll supplement with a mud-mat on the drivers' side - my passenger mats last a very long time by comparison). I also ordered the cargo tray, cargo cover, and wheel locks - all from College Hills Honda.
For the gas tank, I got a Stant locking gas cap #11507 at Advance Auto Parts for about $13, saving $22. Fits great and I was able to save the tethered original. I think even with the way you can hook on the tethered one, it is bound to hit the paint job. Better to have it all the way off the car.
For cargo net, I don't think I'll need one, but if I do, I think I might rather get a large one at a motorcycle/ATV store - I bet one can be had for under $35. I decided I like the bumper as is, so no applique.
Once the title comes through I will probably make an appt and see if I can get a clear bra installed. I am just thrifty enough to consider the static film, but I strongly suspect that water would get underneath, somehow.

probably because there's 10 feet of pipe between the filler and the tank... if anyone can manage to syphon gas out of a Fit's tank, they have earned it...
#15
u gotta also think if someone wants to put sugar in ur tank cuz they wanna pull jokes or be a jerk then ur screwed bye bye motor. its not just to syphon out ur gas its also to protect sleeze balls from putting stuff in ur gas tank.
#16
fully agree... i did not put the locking cap to on prevent syphoning... woopty doo if some retards gets away with 30$ worth of gas.... tops... i wouldnt loose sleep over it.. but the sugar thing AHHHHHH! good bye motor! i would def loose sleep over that.. and giving my car will spend a lot of time parked on a college campus... jokes r not un heard of... and i am not loosing my motor to sum drunk asshole with too much sugar on his hands....

heh, i got he cargo trunk cover, all season weather pads, and the rear bumper applique for free included with the otd charge of 15,900 sticker price. Of course the price went into the stratosphere once you add in the the tax damn you tax. Don't know if i got a deal on mine, but i wanted it cheaper. My parents are freaking loyal customers of this place and all i get are a few accesories.

reviews
I've put a review of the mats in the Fit Inside forum on something that was already set as a sticky. Bottom line is that they look nice but feel cheap and were I not interested in a clean look with logo, I would not have gone OEM on floormats. Form over function, big time.
I didn't see a sticky on the cargo cover so let me offer some thoughts on that.
The cargo cover seems OK but I am disappointed to learn that even with the rear seats reclined all the way, there's still a gap between the back of the rear seats and the housing of the roll-up shade, so theoretically, someone could still see something you've got away from clear view (like a purse, or laptop) in the trunk. Had I known this I probably would not have ponied up the $$ for the cover. To me it should cover everything, or it isn't worth owning. I guess it will shade some things back there so that they don't get hot in the sun, but that is a very minor benefit IMO.
The wheel locks went on easily and I got them torqued properly. Clever idea, but I would bet tire dealer/installers hate them.
The cargo tray is OK. I see the cutouts for the tie down hooks are designed with a raised lip, so that liquids would still have a hard time getting through unless it was pretty deep in there. The tray looks nice. Mine arrived wet, curiously. I do wonder whether it will be all that useful, but I like the notion of easy cleaning.
I do feel better with the locking gas cap.
Overall, for the 5 things I got, I'd say the locking gas cap is a must, the wheel locks are also a must (as insurance against theft). The cargo tray is OK - if you're not likely to get it muddy it probably doesn't matter; the OEM floormats are not worth it, except for looks, and the cargo cover is not worth it - period.

Does anyone know if there's an aftermarket way to get an MP3 jack like the Sport has? I got the base trim automatic, and the two things I really want now are manual transmission - where I'm just SOL - and an MP3 player jack.
Has anyone managed to successfully add that feature after purchasing without the benefit of a soldering iron and an electrical engineering degree?
