When do you shift? (MT only)

I usually shift between 2750-3000rpm. Lower when I'm going into 5th but higher when I'm going out of 1st.

If I had some bolts on probably higher, but I usually try to shift before 3k, any higher just feels airy.

Do you actually look at the rpm before you shift? I've never done that. I just shift when it "feels" right.

even when you first got the fit you didn't look at the tach? i did in the beginning to get used to the car but now it's just based on feel too.

4000-5000, but depending on the situation often higher or lower. Highways, open roads etc. ~6000, for example.

No. But then...all the cars I've owned have always been manual transmission. When I test drove the Nissan Versa, Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris and a couple of other ones, I only looked at the tach once to see the redline and that was it. I never looked at it while test driving it.

Well damn. 11/33 shift at higher than 3500? I only get up that high when I'm getting on the highway or getting outa 1st gear. Y'all better not be complaining about gas mileage if you shift higher than 3500rpm.

I redline it at every gear.

:P

When I had it, shifting was around the 2500 mark.

If you're not in the red, you're dead.

Put it this way... I burn through some fuel. First one across the red line wins!! hahaha.

Lightbulb We're supposed to shift?

We're supposed to shift? I didn't know that. I was wondering why the engine sounds so loud, and my mileage has been so crappy And that probably explains why I have that extra pedal on the floor next to the brakes, doesn't it?

Just kidding, as one other poster noted, I also shift when it feels right. But if no one is behind me at a traffic signal I accelerate slowly, and upshift fairly early, and my mileage reflects it. One of the primary reasons I bought this car was to save money on gas. To throw that same money away on jack rabbit starts makes no sense at all to me. Of course, in my younger days, I had to be the first one at the next stop light

Wow im shocked that by far more people shift above 3500..That explains why people get bad gas mileage in their Fits.

You're absolutely correct. It kind of reminds me of how stupid I was, in my younger days, when I complained about how the tires on my '65 Mustang never seemed to last more than 15-20,000 miles. It turns out that I was leaving the rubber on the street

Ve get too soon oldt, and too late smart

Actually, no it doesn't. When my car was bone stock I was getting 34-35 mpg on average with no difference in driving style. That's dropped to 30-ish right now, but that's due to mods, not driving. Personally, I'm more shocked at how little people seem to understand the powerband of the engine and keep trying to drive it by numbers. It doesn't even start to make decent power until 3000-3500, and the sweet-spot's in at around 4000-4500. The gearing's designed with this in mind, so why anyone wouldn't want to take advantage of that is beyond me. The car drives so much easier when you use the lump as opposed to fighting it.

AMEN to that brother! I swear this engine does have pickup and it only happens after 3500 so for those of you trying to squeeze every last mpg out of the car you're missing a lot of potentially fun driving. Quit granny shifting and take that baby to red

Ditto. My old car didn't have an RPM gauge so I didn't even have the choice.

I dont see how it is possible to drive it over 3500 every shift and to keep your gas mileage the same as shifting right at 3000 but ok...
