It's not just about fun driving though, it's simply using what you've got to its best advantage. If it happens to be fun too, that's just a nice benefit. Winding the car out a bit more doesn't have to mean jackrabbit starts and racing to lights like some people seem to think it does.

Jeebus is that poll accurate? Do so people really shift above 3500rpm?

I shift around 3000rpm. I think your poll, the window is too narrow. It's possible the 3500+ RPM is misleading since that category includes a window of 3000RPM (3500-6500) while the others the window is less than 1000

Totally depends on how I feel that day

I would say the majority of the time I shift around 3K for daily driving, closer to 5 or even 6K for spirited driving. Sometimes it is nice to toot the CAI around 5K too as I pull past somebody

Unfortunately I'm one of those people that has to pull away from the red light first lol!!
But it also depends on what mood I'm in, if im feeling relaxed and chilled, then Im gentle on the car, if im all revved up and feeling lively, it comes through in my driving, and I'm the next Michael Schumacher! I KNOW I can get better fuel consumption figures, but nothing beats reaching that VTEC!!!

Personally, I'm more shocked at how little people seem to understand the powerband of the engine and keep trying to drive it by numbers. It doesn't even start to make decent power until 3000-3500, and the sweet-spot's in at around 4000-4500. The gearing's designed with this in mind, so why anyone wouldn't want to take advantage of that is beyond me. The car drives so much easier when you use the lump as opposed to fighting it.
I agree. I tried aggressive vs slow driving. my mileage stays in the same window.

most people who complain about mileage are atumoatic drivers. I do think it's the AI personality not agreeing w/ the driver's is why AT's get more complaints in mileage.

I always like these polls. I shift at different points all the time. The poll also has to be clarified. What shift point while accelerating. Iusually shift around 3200 when accelerating, but I'll pop it in fifth gear all the time if just maintaining any speed over 35MPH.

Do you guys just hold the gear until you hit that RPM or are some of you smart and if your not accelerating to actually get into the proper gear?. Or are you all in 3rd gear going 40MPH.

I'm confused by the question. :-? Like, do we eventually shift to 5th to save gas, or do we just stay in whatever gear till redline?

I usually shift to 5th unless I'm below 35mph; then I'm in 4th.

Geez, the more I read this thread the more frightened I become. Does anyone even read the manual that came with the car? 5th gear at 35? Honda doesn't even recommend 5th until 53 and their shift points are conservative for fuel economy's sake. At 35, 3rd is the proper gear -- anything higher and you're starting to put more stress and load on the engine than is needed or required. "Drive in the highest gear that lets the engine run and accelerate smoothly. This will give you good fuel economy and effective emissions control." They put this line in there for a reason.

i barely eeeeeeever shift out of 3rd gear before 40mph... i push mine also...the car runs nice, i never shift before 4k on normal driving conditions. if im driving a little uppitty...ill push it to 5 (or 6)more sometimes depending. rev limiter is fun to hit, hah...

thats way too early to be in 5th gear. if youre trying to save gas...shift into 5th once your RPM's in 4th are around 3-4k... read the book if youre worried about gas. if not, rev up the gears and have some fun ;]

I have no worry about gas. My last tank was 80% city and 20% highway; I still got 34.5mpg.

well as somebody said earlier, stressing the engine shifting that early...and probably pissing off a lot of people behind you? lol...when accelerating.

you will still get good gas mileage shifting to 5th as i explained earlier(not how i shift...but 3-4k in 4th gear, shift to 5th, or even 3-4k for shifting in any gear...), just as good as youre getting now. next time you fill up your tank try it that way until you fill up again...check out your mpg see how it compares. post back with results if you do.

i still get great gas mileage for how i shift.
