Road Trip Report Card (VBP Sport AT)
Ok folks just got back from my trip from California to Colorado Springs. I went there on vacation and watched the Pike Peak Hill climb last weekend.
Here are the details of my trip and the Fit. Its a VBP Sport AT with no mods. (Unless you count window tint and an Asimo doll hanging on the rear view mirror a mod)
Items and car that affect weight was just me, my 30 lb beagle, and a travel bag with clothes for the week.
Total distance: Approx 1190 miles (one way).
Route: Mostly the I-40E and I-25N
Total drive time (non stop except for gas, food, etc): 15-16 hours give or take.
MPG observed: 36-37
Comfort: I am 5'10" - 230lbs. The Fit was fairly comfortable for long drive. I had the cruise control on for about half to two thirds of the trip, so foot or leg cramps were not an issue. My back did hurt a little towards the end, but if you think about it, sit in your favorite couch for 15 hours straight with limited movement and your back or butt will hurt too. So I had no issues with regards to comfort. I also had the back seats folded down so my dog had room to fool around back there during the trip.
MPG: I feel I could have gotten better numbers than what I placed above. However I got nailed both ways with traffic in construction zones, and got an attack of lead foot. While my average speed hovered around 70-75mph. There were times when I was hitting 85mph and above. Also you have to remember there are stretches of uphill drives which can help kill mpg. I also had the AC on approx a third to half of the way both to and from because driving through some sections of CA, AZ, and NM were just WAY too hot to even have the windows rolled down.
Performance: The Fit held its own. Nothing too crazy as the car only has 109hp, if you are expecting it to move mountains, you need to switch to decaf. Handling was good, even during very wet and heavy down pours which scared some drivers to pulling over because visibility in the rain dropped to one, maybe two cars in front. The only issue I had was not being used to the noise of the engine revs during the long uphills. The noise, while normal, was just something I was not used to hear for extended periods and caused me to ease off and drop my speed down. It can get loud! There was also a little bit of tire noise from the stock rubber. However aside from that, there was no issues from driving the car for 15+ hours straight at a time in temps and conditions that ranged from heavy rain, to 104 degrees around Needles, CA.
Misc: The Fit killed a lot of bugs to and from during my trip. The seats also have a VERY bad habit of sucking up dog hair. I will have to vacum the car this coming weekend. Damn dog.
So there you go, if anyone was wondering what a Fit does, here is my story.
