Arrow Shock

Nine times out of ten when I exit my car my hair stands up on my hand and as I grab the door to close it I'm SHOCKED!!! And sometimes I can see a BOLT between my hand and the door. Now some may say to bad but I hope this does not happen when I'm pumping my $2.99 a gallon gas does this happen to anyone else? And how do I fix it?

My b/f gets shocked all the time when he gets out of the driver side only. I almost never get shocks though. Perhaps it's the type of clothing you're wearing?

My guess was that it was something to do with grounding on the driver door exactly *because* of the risk of a static discharge causing a fire at the pumps. Anyone else here see that Mythbusters episode on cell phones at the pumps? They showed that it was static shocks that caused the fires, not cells.

Anyway, no real idea, just my guess.

There was a big thing running on the news some time ago about static & fires at the pump. The hubby always touches the top or side of the car getting in & out to disrupt the charge.

Both my Fit and 02 Accord do it, especially in dry weather.

I wonder if it is more related to radial tires? A quick fix, although not very cool, would be to suspend a piece of rubber or a chain from the undercarriage to ground the car. You sometimes see the rubber straps hanging down on cars, and to guess, it's probably something you can get through JC Whitney. The local fire trucks use chains to ground them.
