Canada MPG is misleading to USA people. conversion is needed

I think litters are just a little bit more then usa quarts . When people in the 50 states read that you are getting 51 mpg it is not the same as saying 50 mpg in the USA. The numbers in canada are going to be higher. Correct me if I am wrong.

I only ended up getting 42.5 mpgs, but it's getting better so we'll see.

What??? You push the little black knob next to it and it resets to zero
It is not rocket science

THIS IS ODD!
How much different are the i-DSI europe engines to the 1.5 vti ones?

I'm averaging 45.1 mpg EASILY even when I step on the car, back and forth from school and even around town.
My brother claimed he got 54 mpg as well in my car, I haven't really been paying attention to it, but the times I do look, namely after booting the car around a bit, its 45ish.
back and forth from school, the land is relatively even with little or no traffic, the driving conditions have been perfect since I've got my car....

Infact, I'll run a test later to see if I can knock up a higher MPG, and take a photo just to prove you sceptics wrong, haha.

Generally speaking, the i-DSI engines are designed for economy, and the VTEC for performance.

You should also note that the US has their own definition of 'gallon', 3.785411784L, whereas in the rest of the world a gallon is 4.54609L. (The US also has a 'dry gallon' of 4.40488377086L, but that's their problem.)

Check your tire pressure. I had low highway mpg (32-33) and it was because my tires were at 28 psi. I put them up to 32 and viola!, 36-38 mpg.

(My post in another thread)
Some of the mileage threads here were fairly disturbing to me because the huge variances between some of our cars by location. But I have recently discovered (thanks to kps) that:

Imperial (Canadian and UK) Gallon = 4.546 liter
US Gallon = 3.785 liter

To convert some of the mileage claims made on this board; from US to imperial, multiply by 1.20 (hey, my 35mpg just jumped to 42mpg), from imperial to US, multiply by 0.834 (48mpg is only 40mpg, and a lot more believable).

To make these comparisons valid at all, please identify the units of measure used. It does appear that most people are reporting in MPG(u)

Perhaps using MPG(i) or MPG(u) would make this easier to understand. Now I understand why the big push towards metric in the 1970's.

Eric

BTW, My 1990 Geo Metro 5M mentioned in another thread got over 51MPG(u) averaged over 130,000 miles. I guess they don't build them like that any more...

litres are litres, quarts are quarts

when you fill at the pump u get the volume in quarts, we get it in litres, 3.785 litres to one US gallon

if you take the inverse of L/100km you get km/L, multiply by 3.785 for km/US gallon, multiply again by 0.62 to get miles per us gallon. This is the method I've used to calculate all my tanks.

MPGs can only be different when you use imperial or US gallons

And on that note my 40.5mpg and 43.8mpg figures were in US gallons. That's about the highest I think I'll ever get.

KnifeEdge,

That's cool. At least if we know which "G" of MPG, the statement has more meaning. My post was to add some credibility to other's claims around 50 MPG.

I'm sorry, you've probably said it somewhere, but I can't find whether your Fit is MT or AT. That's important in this conversation too.

I never would have thought to look it up before but it turns out that while liters are litres, quarts can be different.

US quart = 0.946 liter
Imperial quart = 1.136 liter

I tried to include the conversion in ounces, but there are imperial ounces that are different from US ounces too.

At least the metric measurements are consistant.

oh right, it's the base auto. no modifications done for the 40.5 or 43.8mpg pulls, the next highest mpg figures ive gotten were 38.7 and 37.9 mpgs

I just switched to mobil 1 supersyn 5w20 today with the S2000 PCX 004 oil filter so I'll report if my mileage changes at all, I'm expecting minimal gains if not none at all.

that's good idea, from now on I'll try and use the MPG(US) notation as much as possible. Perhaps it's because older cars did not have as much safety equipment (weight),regulations regarding emmisions (restrictive exhausts ??) and what not ??

I averaged 50MPG(US) on my first Honda, a CRX-HF. Bought it new, & drove it until my son took it off to college.
I'm on my 4th Honda, a 94 Civic VX. This year, I'm averaging 43.5MPG(US). I looked very hard at a new Fit, but only have 217,000 miles on my
current ride. Plus, $16,500 buys a lot of gas.
Good luck with your Fit's. I'll join you in a few years.

I'm still getting about 30mpg.....I'm at 5,495 miles now.

The light always come on at around 275 miles.....

Just did an oil change at 5,000 miles......

Mobil 1 filter with 5W20 Synthetic Penzoil.

I think I drive too FAST.....burn more gas.

I was able to go 348 miles on a single tank of gas, filled up again after going 20 miles with the empty light on.

I finally hit 45 mpgs. Driving back from Miami at 60-65mph most of the trip and 10% city driving.

im ne here and don't have a fit yet. i have to wait till after the wedding and i can decide on color..

now i was wondering if one bought a vtech controller and made it so vtech comes in at a higher rpm would that give you more gas mileage?\

also i know light weight rims make a huge difference.

Changing the Vtec control should not have much effect if you are shooting for high fuel economy, at the RPM appropriate for high mileage the factory vtec is not engaged.

Lighter rims will also not have much effect on fuel economy, but they will free up available power for accelerating. The people that are modifying all sorts of cars for maximum FE use heavier pulleys, flywheels and rims to maximize the rotational mass to maintain constant speeds. This will make your acceleration worse, but high fuel economy is not acceleration friendly.

Eric
