Fuel Guage Question

With my Fit Sport A/T, I have yet to drive until the tank is completely empty. When the fuel gauge light first goes on, I've determined that I have about 1.8 gallons left. What happens to the fuel gauge warning light (if anything) that tells you that you are really running out of gas? Does it start to blink?

As far as I know, it kinda stops going forward w/ the rest of the car. j/k

Seriously, nothing happens, so best to fill up asap after it goes on. It's not really good anyway to let it get to the last drop due to sediment, etc. built up, from what I've heard.

Isn't the last drop a myth especailly cars these days have fuel filters
to catch them?

If don't know about sediment, but there's 2 good reasons to not run it all the way down frequently.

1) I believe most cars use air pressure as assistence to help pump the fuel thru. If there's less gas, (more air) there's more to pump before you have any pressure buildup, so the fuel pump needs to work harder.

2) Water build up in the gas tank due to condensation. If there's a lot of air in the tank, you can get water in your tank from air condensation. This is no fun in the winter, as anyone who's had a frozen gas line can attest to.

he's right. nothing really happens. BUT the sediment is a myth. If you've taken a fuel tank out before and noticed where it sits, It picks pu fuel from teh bottom anyway. So if you run it from full or till the last drop, it's picking up the fuel from the bottom of the tank, NOT the top. The only thing that is floating on the top is the float for your fuel gauge.

Thanks everyone for your help. I drive 100 miles a day and fill up at 300 miles usually before the gas light comes on. And when it does, I know that I have about 1.8 gallons left and that I can travel another 50 to 60 miles. I was just wondering if anything different happens to the fuel light.

Doubt it, but more expensive cars tend to have a "mile range" indicator that tells you how many miles you can go until the tank is empty. Off topic, but I would have liked that alot more than the "oil life" indicator on our cars.
