You guys are smokin crack if you are really getting hi 30's never mind 40+! Must be driving like grannies with your tires max inflated, down hill with a tail wind -- both ways! I drive 70-75 on the highway and rarely get over 34 mpg. If I drive 60 I MAY get 34 mpg. I mostly get just over 33 highway, 31 city. And I drive fairly east on the gas.
On another note, how far do you drive on a tank? I often get 380 miles with a high of 430 miles. With shaking the car again and again when filling I often put in 12.7 gallons. In a 10.9 gallon tank. So I think a better judge of your milage is how many miles you get out of a tank. Again, I want to see your odometer after you say you are getting 40+ mpg. I bet you will have a hard time topping 450 miles.

Before I started hypermiling I was averaging just about 29 MPG. By adding 10 MPG to my fuel economy by hypermiling, I'm reducing my fuel consumption annually by about a third, and since I drive about 20,000 miles a year, that means I'm consuming 517 gallons vs. the 690 gallons it would take if I drove my Fit "normally." That means I'm saving about $392 a year in fuel costs but more importantly, I'm also reducing my carbon footprint by a third. If everyone did that, we wouldn't be in the ecological mess we are in today. Of course, it wouldn't hurt if the auto manufacturers would work harder at making cars with better fuel economy.

Naysayers be dam*ed...
Just had a similar experience. On about 50/50 driving I got 39 MPG. Drove 249 Miles and filled up 6.326 gallons which equals a little over 39 MPG. My MPG meter gave me 43 MPG, which is within its normal margin (3-5).

My car switch (from a car that averaged less than 22 to my fit that averages 36+) coupled with hypermiling will save me around $375 per year, assuming $3 per gallon (I only drive 7000 miles a year since I walk to work). The carbon savings as well will be significant.
Woot.

You guys are getting great mileage. When I first bought it I was getting 32 MPG. I put in premium for a couple tanks and got 35. Then I installed a Fujita intake with regular fuel and was getting 35. Removed the intake for a K&N drop in and now am getting 32 again on regular fuel but only tested one tank so far. I'd say this is 85% highway driving between 65-80. I live in the Northeast so I've got lots of hills around the area. I would love to fill the tank up and just drive straight until the car runs completely out of fuel. It would be cool to see what the final #'s are. Oh, I also have 57K on it.

Hey guys! Is it good crack?? {:]
According to the car's computer I had averaged 43.7 on a recent trip... averaged @ 75 w/ac straight road. That is A-V-E-R-A-G-E-D...
Went down to mid 30's w/fill up. Daily, I average 33 but it is different on fill up.
Great car get hi-5's from other FIT drivers but engine, even the new one, is much too small and this area's hills take their toll.

I have a lot of hills here too, I get it back by shifting to neutral on the downslope and letting it coast. When you shift back into drive at the bottom of the hill, let the engine catch on and then LIGHTLY apply the accelerator until you're at speed again. Otherwise it makes your engine rev over 3K.

I have an '09 Sport Automatic and I've noticed that I do not seem to get mileage I had expected. I normally don't get better than 25 mpg, unless it includes a long highway trip and I put on cruise control. I tried to take it easy on acceleration and let off the gas whenever I can but no noticeable change. Just my girlfriend asking me why I am driving like an old man. Any ideas? I did read something about a break in period, I have just under 7,000 miles on it. I also have noticed that what my car tells me and what I calculate for my mpg are different.
#1310
09, it's because you live in Conshie. If you're not hypermiling, those hills will eat up your fuel economy, no matter how light you are on the pedal. Are you calculating your fuel economy or going by the display? I don't have the display in mine ('08 GD Sport) but I understand they're not very accurate. Basically what you do is, you fill up the tank and reset the trip meter, then drive until it's time for another fill-up, and when you get it filled, you divide miles by gallons. That's about as accurate as you can get. Also, short trips around town will definitely get you lower mileage than highway trips (unless you're on the Schuylkill at rush hour every day).
#1311
Wow, I didn't expect to find someone who knows the area I live in. Conshy is full of hills and I know climbing them eats up gas so I avoid them as much as I can. I work in King of Prussia so you would think I would use 76 but it's easier and better on gas to take the back roads because that stretch of 76 is too much stop and go and crawls a lot. I understand how to calculate my fuel economy but I was just saying what I calculate and what the MPG meter on the car says is way off. I using calculate like 20-22 mpg and my car say 25-27 mpg.

2009 fit sport auto w/5000 miles. I do 80% highway driving around 70 mph. Mileage was a little dissapointing at 37 mpg according to the computer. It dawned on me one day to check the tire pressure, yup, 29 psi. I filled to 36 psi and mpg came up to 41.5 (37.7 calculated). I am now trying 45 psi out of the 55 psi maximum rating for the dunslops. I find the last half of the tank lies a little bit as it is never as many miles as the first half. Also i dont think going up hills kills as I have 2 big ones on the free way--its the down that kills me. I spend gas going down the hill to keep up to speed (wind resistance at 70 mph). If i let it coast in 5th the mpg even out quite a bit.

Sport/AT: 30 mpg on the nose (calculated by fuel delivery, not mileage meter) on the first tank, which included a lot of intentional acceleration/deceleration to seat the rings, lots of use of the paddle shifters, and mostly stop and go driving. Just what I was hoping for.
#1314
I have about 57K on it right on a Sport AT so far. I've been getting 32 on 87 fuel. Every time I put 93 in I get about 35 a gallon. I have pretty much and up and down commute to work every day. 23 miles one way. Usually drive around 65-70 and having to downshift quite a bit. When I had the Fujita SRI on, I was getting 35 as well.
Does anybody know at what point a Honda usually gets to the spot of the best fuel mileage before it starts tapering off as the car gets older? In terms of mileage of course.

Fit has been driven in Seattle area and surrounding western WA areas (Cascades/Olympics etc). I've been quite pleased - I am confident I can obtain 40+mpg if I do drive with light foot, and have never gotten below 27 mpg (and that was during break-in).

Zippy and I just go back from our annual eastern trek. Load besides self is about 175 pounds of gear. Had a passenger and gear, about 180 more pounds, on the way out, then another 40 or so pounds more gear on the way back but no passenger. Speeds were generally 72-75 MPH. Air used 60-70% of the time with some manual cycling. Tires at 40 PSI here in Colorado so probably about 37 PSI for most of the trip. I had a big headwind most of the way back which is reflected in the numbers. The last tank on the way back was at 80 most of the way once I cleared the headwind.
Gotta love the Fit!

No crack here
Been a while since I last reported my mileage but I have gone over 50 at least half a dozen times. My best was 51.3 and yes I do get over 500 miles to a tank full. Last week I had gone 417 miles with 1/4 tank left before I re-fueled. I have almost 21K miles on my 09 fit (2nd oil change) and now average between 47 and 49MPG to a trip. The only time it gets worse gas mileage is when my wife drives it and she still gets 40.

There's no way your getting that mileage and here's why.
I have an 07 AT with a 10.8 gallon tank. Your 09 has a 10.6 gallon tank, even smaller than mine. Do you have a MT or AT? Do you fill up when the light comes on?
Your 417 with a quarter tank.... Are you saying 1/4 tank until light or empty? Technically a quarter tank is at 2.65 gallons until empty. That leaves 7.95 gallons used. 417 miles divided by 7.95 gallons would be 52.4, no way. OR 389 total miles at your 49 MPG, 373 at 47MPG. If you meant 1/4 tank until the light comes on, then you used 5.9 gallons, and would make your calculation even further off.
You can't count most of reserve as mileage unless you actually USE that fuel.
IMO, the most accurate way to measure MPG, is to fill up to full. Drive until the light comes on. At that moment you know you have 1.7/1.8 gallons left. Record your mileage right then and divide it by 8.9/9 later if you have to.

First tank in my new Fit
Got my 09 Fit AT with Navi last week. Great car. First fill up with mixed driving - 32 mpg. Happy so far but want to push it up a bit. Going to come bicycle races this weekend that require freeway driving. Let's see how it does.
I've got 36 PSI in the tires now. Do you think I should try 40?
