AND, does anyone know if there is a hatchback that 'really does get' 30+ mpg in the city?
I thought that the Yaris (Liftback) could fairly easily achieve 30 mpg+ in city, esp. if it comes with a 5-speed.

That's what I wonder, too. Maybe the "break in" on the Fit is really longer than we thought. I think that, in general, older cars get better mileage than newer ones. After a few years, perhaps the mileage will be better on the ATs

I'm not too worried about my mileage. I know for a fact that the car shines on the open highway - I can get MPG in the mid 30s doing 80-85. However, in stop and go traffic/city, which makes up a huge percentage of my driving, it doesn't fare so well, and most cars don't do so well in those sorts of conditions. I get in the mid to upper 20's most weeks (I'd say my average is about 27 or 28ish).

Compared to the last car I drove regularly, the Fit is miles better in all other aspects, and about the same in gas mileage, so I'm good.

(My $35,000 G35 coupe gets 18 mpg and i can keep up with $80,000 porsches! What kind of crappy little piece of doo-doo is this car? Can someone please give me a reason not to sell this half-a*sed car? AND, does anyone know if there is a hatchback that 'really does get' 30+ mpg in the city?

Not to worry. Your Fit Sport has more demand than your G35. There are no used FITs for sale in most cities and many G35 coupes and sedans every week in the newpaper (many for about $22,000-25,000 in my area). If you ever do sell your FIT you will be fine.

The Sport FIT auto is not for city driving. It will do fine on handling but isn't the most miserly until you do some mixed or freeway driving. I doubt you can get 18 mpg in the city with your G35 coupe unless you are really really really good on not stomping on the throttle. I have lots of friends with G35s that report about 16 mpg at best in mixed driving and we have few highways in my area compared to urban areas.

For the long distance commuter the FIT is fine. Expect about 32 to 35 mpg. For the city more like 25 if you can drive the speed limit and don't haul really heavy stuff around like a boat full of people or cargo. Keep your tire pressures up. Don't drive like a G35.

Hatchbacks that get 35 mpg in city driving? Sure there are plenty but the leaders will be those with hybrid technology. Prius is a perfect example, probably about 40-45 mpg in the city under real conditions. Civic hybrid is not far behind about 40 mpg but only available in a sedan.

Sounds like Infinity needs to make a G35 hybrid hatchback. Tell them that's what the country needs. Unfortunately Nissan isn't making hybrids yet so neither is Infinity. Toyota and Honda lead the way.

VW has TDI technology (Golf,Jetta, Beetle) but you have to deal with diesel fuel and VW reliability. The 2006 Golf GLS TDI in 4 doors with hatchback is worth a test drive. 5 Speed manual or automatic transmission. 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS. Front and side airbags standard. Golf is replaced by 2007 Rabbit. Rated about 44 mpg highway. New Rabbit has no TDI option and only gets 30 mpg on highway.

1.9 liter 4 cylinder engine 100 HP/ 177 ft lbs torque
About $20,000+ with options.

Other small hatchbacks with high mpg for city use-
2006 Scion xA 31/38 mpg $13,500+ options. Not sure if it will do any better than the FIT and it's not as versatile for storage or as well made.
2007 Toyota Yaris $12,000 + options 34/39 mpg for 2 Dr. Hatchback with automatic. Not as fun to drive, could do better for mpg, no airbags standard, not as well made as the FIT. Good replacement for the echo, not even as nice as a Corolla. The 2 Door Hatch is very small, 4 Door is only in Sedan. Coming from a G35 this is almost the opposite in automotive technology.

I finally made a spreadsheet. Lifetime average for 6200 miles has been 28.9mpg. Probably 2/3rds being city driving. Not bad, but not great.

I'm not impressed either with gas mileage.
Can't get over the 28mpg hump.

The EPA ratings are as false as a FEMA promise. 37EPA on the AT Sport and most people are probably getting 30 average as I am. That's off by 23%. If EPA can't give realistic estimates, they should stop their ratings altogether. I travel 114 miles/day Ca. freeway, flat, minimum stop & go, still only 30MPG. I have a 86 CRX I've owned since Jan'87 now with 301,000 miles on it and it still gets 40MPG on the same daily 114 mile round trip. And still has much more power than the FIT! Same size engine! So, instead of improving MPG, Honda MPG has gotten far worse. So....bye bye FIT for me.

I average like 26-27 which sucks! I do more highway then city driving and I still can't break the 30MPG mark. Majority of the time my gas light comes on at around 240 miles. The only way I'll ever break over 30MPG is if I do strictly highway which I averaged like 31MPG before. I bought this car thinking I'll get 30MPG average but only 26-27MPG kills me.

I don't drive like a maniac either and its not helping. I really don't know what to do about this car. Hopefully when I switch to 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic, it'll help.

Checking back in as requested a whole bunch of pages ago...

Now that it's winter and temps are 35 - 55 @ night and 45 - 75 during the day, we're averaging about 33 in mixed 50/50 driving with 7,000 miles on it since April 06.

1. 10-14-06 267.9m 9.5gal 28.2mpg
2. 10-19-06 241.1m 9.0gal 26.7

4. 10-31-06 238.9m 9.1gal 26.3
5. 11-06-06 241.0m 9.6gal 25.1
5. 11-11-06 212.0m 7.6gal 27.8
6. 11-16-06 227.0m 9.2gal 24.7
7. 11-22-06 242.5m 9.5gal 24.7
8. 11-28-06 215.4m 8.7gal 24.7
9. 12-03-06 215.5m 8.4gal 25.3
10. 12-09-06 236.7m 9.6gal 24.7

14. 12-30-06 244.9m 9.0gal 27.2
That is the best I will probably get... but on the highway on road trip: 40mpg going down and 38.6 on the way back.

^ Yep, those look like my Sport AT numbers as well. I actually got nearly identical results for a road trip as well. Problem is, the wife and I only do road trips every couple of months!

Ah well, I still love the car...

Tank 9 = 33.886mpg
Tank 10 = 32.045
Tank 11 = 31.786
Tank 12 = 32.251
Tank 13 = 31.461 (Lowest Ever)
Tank 14 = 37.280 (Highest Ever)

Total MPG thru 3850 miles = 33.559.

2007 VBP Sport AT
This car seems to HATE the wind. Going into the wind for almost 3/4 of the tank yields the worst (31.461mpg). Going downwind gave the best (37.280mpg). This was at roughly the same speed, cruise control set between 75-80mph.

It sounds to me like you did not even bother to read my post, or read just what you wanted and discarded the rest.

First of all, my G will command the highest resale value when compared to most other cars. I'm sorry if you don't like that, but that just a fact.

Second, you can 'doubt' all you want, but the cold hard truth is I get a solid 18 mpg in my G, (thats 100% city, and not feather footing it). If you don't believe me then your just in denial. I've checked it many, many times, and it repeatedly cam up 18 mpg.

Third, I NEVER asked if there was a hatchback that got 35+ mpg in the city. Those are words you made up yourself.

WARNING: People reading this guy's posts should know he's NOT telling the truth about nearly everything he says. Don't believe a word this guy says.

I got my all time worst record with the FIT reaching only 25mpg. Very but its because I didnt use my gas on my last fill up. I know my mind aint playing tricks on me but Mobil gas gets the best results for me. I usually hit 275-280 when the gas light turns on.

I checked the tire pressure this weekend and they were running 22-25psi cold. I cranked them up to 35psi in an effort to get better mpg. Results soon.....
