Mileage reports: Automatic transmission (5AT)

Very Disappointing. The gas mileage on my 6 month old (2500 miles on the odo) is only running about 22 MPG with my wife driving about 80% city driving and 20% highway/interstate. Will bring it in at 5K miles for an oil change and ask the maintenance folks to check out the computer. Should be getting about 28 to 30 MPG

BUT, it is a LOT better on the open road. And I really like the car.
My prob is that I am still used to my Accord which gets 32 on the open road. My foot is still being a little heavy and I am slowly getting used to "drive by wire" thing.
The Fit is a great commuting car but I still get a complaint from one of my car-poolers... she doesn't like the stiff suspension at all. But has to admit that the Fit is a lot roomier than her 96 Toyota Corolla 4dr. There is just NO room in the rear of her car and she doesn't know how to drive....

Trend continues...
1st tank I got 27 mpg
2nd tank I got 29 mpg
3rd tank I got 31 mpg
4th tank I got 31 mpg
On the 4th tank I did a little more "city/suburbs" driving and I got basically the same mpg as I did last tank which was 85% highway. Also, since my Fit is broken in I gave the paddle shifters a try and drove her a little harder than normal. So maybe the fuel consumption issue is not as bad as I feared...

Bad gas mileage
I just bought a Honda Fit, basic, automatic. I love the car. There is one major problem, though. I am getting horrible gas mileage. All of my driving is in the City. My three tanks of gas averaged 20, 18.5, 21 miles per gallon. Any ideas on why my mileage is so horrible?

One rule of thumb that you can use to figure out this or any car's "true city" gas mileage is the Consumer Reports road test's city mileage. As you may know, CR reports three figures for the mileage: city, highway, and overall. Honda Fit Automatic obtained 22 mpg in the CR's city mode, which duplicates a big city traffic. Using this number, while your figures are on the lower end, it is possible to argue that they are not outrageously off the CR's number.
In Japan, most (90%) of the Fits sold are 1.3 L with CVT. In Tokyo, 20 mpg for a Fit is pretty common, despite the smaller engine and the CVT tuned for that kind of traffic. It's still better than other cars in the same circumstance. Someone I know had a Subaru WRX, and he was getting 9 (yes, nine) mpg in Tokyo.
What I would like to encourage you to do is to take your Fit out on a long highway drive to see what kind of mileage you can achieve. If, after such a run, your mileage is still low, e.g., below 30 mpg, then you should take the car into your dealership for adjustment. But if the highway number seems okay, then I would say that it is your driving environment that is the major culprit of the mileage results.

Not to worry get used to the pedal and 'fly by wire' and the gas milage will go up. I am getting from 25 to 28 depending... on... ? around the Atlanta area. Even though I commute 23 miles one way daily up and down I75 & I85 as well as some side street traffic the stop-an-go driving is really congested. Thusly mpg may suffer.
When I want to go fast I just break out my 2000 Accord which really upsets my carpoolers Ha! Ha!

My last tank was 90% highway driving between 65-75mph. some was in commute traffic some it was not all at that speed but close. I got my best milage ever 33.4mpg.
Usually with a mix of 75% city and 24% highway I get 25-28 mpg. My commute is so short (7 miles) the car barely gets a chance to warm up before its time to stop. Still I love the size of the car, the amount of "things" you can put into it and the way the back seats work to give you space.
What is hard is installing kids car seats in the back seats. I find it hard getting the clips on those latches between the seats!!!

This car totally broke my heart. I bought it thinking I was gonna get a car that gets like 30MPG average and I can't even break 250 miles without the gas light coming on.
The only time I got 31MPG was when I did strictly highway and that's pretty sad when alot of others Fit owners getting high 30s on the highway. I don't have a heavy foot and I try to conserve gas as much as I can. Anybody have any ideas what I can do, to improve my gas milage? I have a Fit Sport Auto by the way.

Every time you use your brakes it's throwing fuel out the window. Accelerating from standstill or up a hill is just as bad.

I've always wondered why there was such a wide range of results with the same engine, from the low 20's to the 40's. I've now used 16 tankfuls and I've averaged just under 30 mpg (Sport AT) driving about 80% local, no hills and 20% highway. I just had my first all-highway measurement and I got 38.4 (70 mph most of the way, no A/C). These results are pretty much what I would expect from the EPA estimates.

In order to even out the variance in driving conditions, I always tell people who complain of a poor mileage to take their cars out on a long freeway drive to see how their mileage is (a more or less controlled environment). Drive near the posted speed limit for the purpose of the test, or you will be introducing another variable (higher drag). If the mileage obtained is still low, then there is something wrong (loudly complain to the car's manufacturer). But if the mileage after that kind of drive is near the EPA number, then you know that it is the driving condition that is making the MPG figures gyrate.
Having said that, though, some cars do appear to show a greater level of variance in the mileage than others. In Japan, the Fit is one of the most famous cases of that. It seems to me that the Fit's engine has certain sweet spots, and if you hit them well, you get a good mileage in many situations. But if you don't, you get punished. Some cars have a lot of sweet spots like that. Maybe the Fit has only a few, and we just need to find them.

Has any one reached 40 mpg with the automatic fit? Yes I am in the market for a new Fit. My car was totaled. I averaged 33 aroound town and 38 with the base manual...
