spread sheet is a good idea.I have one but it seems to not do the math so I stopped using it. I have a paper trail for now.

Since this thread isnt long enough yet, I thought I would toss in some more. I pretty much do the same drive every week (240-260 miles) back and forth to work for my wife and I and some shopping. No more than 15 miles at one time on the highway. Anyway, I had been getting a little under 30 mpg average. I did the Idle Learn Procedure and my next tank was just over 34. Now, since it has only been one tank, I cant say that this has been a miracle or not, but it looks promising. I always fill up at the same gas station and drive quite aggressively (hit redline multiple times each trip). I also just dropped it off at the dealership for an oil change tonight and some warranty repairs. I will see if the milage improves more with some fresh oil in it.

Mileage Update: Looks like as my car breaks in and adapts to my driving style, my milieage is leveling off around 36 mpg! Below are the records for my first 15 tanks - most of it commuting 50 miles each way with 60% highway, 40% mild stop and go with some significant hills. Sport AT.
Tank.

Here's an update, now that I've passed the 3000 mile mark (purchased 6/27/06). This is for a Sport AT with mixed city/highway milage, AC on most of the time:

Milage Gal MPG
306.0 8.787 34.8
318.5 9.126 34.9
302.7 9.201 32.9
322.4 8.536 37.8
342.3 9.424 36.3
321.6 9.447 34.0
327.9 9.427 34.8
321.6 8.909 36.1
322.3 9.422 34.2
335.1 9.251 36.3

Total average for 3221 miles is 35.2 mpg. On this last tank I dropped to 60% oil life, so I still have a ways to go before getting the original oil changed (I will get the oil changed at 15% oil life).

The 34 mpg was on the very next tank. The current tank is on track to do even better (about 140 miles just a little below 3/4 tank). Will have to keep you posted. Plus, just had the oil changed today, and the dealership brought the air down to 32 psi again. I will have to pump them up again (keep them at 40psi cold). Hopefully your milage was a fluke. Good luck.

I'll ask again:

Why don't one of you guys with the AT, that are getting poor gas mileage, go have your auto tranny fluid changed. There's GOT to be SOMETHING going on with the AT Fits. I have YET to see someone with a MT getting POOR fuel economy.

Coincidence? I think not.

Stop complaining, and try something no one else has yet.

This all points to a computer issue at least on of the following might have a bug:

VTEC - controlled by computer
AT - computer
Drive by wire - computer

If any one or more of these computer controlled systems are - for some reason - making the car drive inefficiently, there goes your mileage.

I'm wondering the best way to trouble shoot these though....

Trowpa, if there's something goofy with the transmission, something causing power to be absorbed or otherwise not make it to the wheels, it's gonna burn more gas.

Some people with the AT have a problem and others don't. Maybe the factory used some incorrect fluid? That's an easy thing to swap/rule out.

Unless someone's willing to swap ECUs (after figuring out how to remove it from the car), we should have people focus on what they can actually do without much effort.

Fray - i agree its easy to change AT fluid - its just hard for me to believe the factory would use the wrong fluid....much more believable that there'd be an ECU issue - but sure -why not rule everything out we can. (I"m just glad i'm averaging 36 mpg and don't have to be the guinea pig!)

Here's a good idea... someone with poor fuel economy, go get your Fit on a dyno. Have them monitor the a/f ratio, and power output. If power output is much lower than where it should be, or the a/f ratio is way out of whack, then that dyno sheet could be taken to Honda as solid evidence.

Personally, I think there's something wrong with the (some) automatic transmissions. SOMETHING is taking too much power to do it's job, and it only seems to be on AT Fits.

Smile Gas Milage

I just completed the first half of a 1200 mile trip from Central Virginia to North of Watertown NY. The car is a Base with Automatic, Two adults, about 200 pounds of "Stuff", AC on all the way, Running 70 MPH most of the way and 80 to 90 a couple of times. Refueled 3 times, MPG was 36.8, 37.2 and 37.9. The car currently has 3500 miles on it. To say the least, I am very satisfied with the car.

I have VBP Sport Automatic. My first tank was 36 and my second was 37.

So far so good. I will keep close tabs on it.

my milage went from 29-30 mpg to 24mpg on my tank following idle learn.. yes.. i filled it up after the idle learn.. wonder why i got poor milage immediately thereafter.. others have gotten good milage after idle learn..

I think that everyone shares the frustration that you and a few others have on low mileage. I think it is that frustration over the lack of a solution, and not any kind of anger over seeing bad mileage reports. It is hard to communicate tone on a message board, but I think that the tone has been supportive. There have been a lot of ideas floating around, they just didn't work out. I hope that you find a way to get your mpg up.

Fit for Duty in a Sport AT courier route

We have one of three Fits we are to get this summer to replace Matix autos. They run routes of 250-300 miles on the northern prairie of the central US. We get lots of wind and have 65 MPH on the rural 2-lane and 75 MPH on the Interstate Hwys. Our loads are light rarely over 100 pounds of hospital supplies and specimens in a vehicle. We just hit 4K on the odo this past week and we also got a 38MPG day. 35-38 mpg's seem to be the norm on this car. My drivers are seniors and they keep it steady between 55-75 MPH. I'm sure at 55 MPH all day and less wind these things would break 40 MPG's, no problem.

After a half dozen fill-ups with my AT Sport Fit, I've noticed gradually increasing gas mileage. I also finally broke 30 MPG, if only barely.
  1. 29.46 MPG (dealer tank, and lots more highway than normal)
  2. 27.12 MPG
  3. 27.18 MPG
  4. 27.97 MPG
  5. 28.19 MPG
  6. 30.16 MPG
The first tank, from the dealer, included a drive from San Antonio, where I bought the car, to Round Rock (north end of Austin), where I work.

The rest of that tank, and nearly all of the other five, was used driving back and forth on the 13-mile trip between home (Austin) and work (Round Rock), AC on about 80% of the time.

After getting 27.12 MPG on the first non-delaer tank driving like I drove my Neon, I drove the next tank very carefully - slow acceleration, minimal AC use, etc. Since that got me a whopping 0.06 MPG better than the previous tank, I went back to driving like I normally do.

Oil life went to 90% at just under 650 miles, and that's where it still is at about 1215 (I expect it'll drop to 80% soon if the rate is roughly steady).

Yeah I drive a whopping 1.5 mile stop 'n go trip to work. The engine is cold 30% of the trip. I'm not too worried about getting 25 mile/gal for the trip. I've been on the high way every now and then. I can "see" the MPG improvement on the highway. I'm also about to go on a trip to Philly soon. (From Baltimore) hopefully I can log some real highway data. As long as I beat the Rabbit in MPG, I'm not worried at all.

MPG
28.45 (after dealer tank)
28.22
28.07
27.02
26.25

Well, we took the Fit on a road trip this weekend from Portland to Sunriver. Our car now has around 2100 miles on it. The tank there (tank number 8), plus around town driving, we got 33.32 MPG. That is going up and down the mountain passes with four adults and around 50 to 100 pounds of luggage and food, plus AC on the entire time!

Going back was even better! That tank, even with all the same variables, we got 40.7mpg! I couldn't believe how well the Fit did with that many passengers. Most of the time we were driving around 60mph in very hilly areas so the revs were sometimes at 3500rpm for a few minutes at a time.

This brings my total average to 30.31mpg. I was getting mid 20's and low 30's when before this trip.
