Please slow down for speed bumps. They are there to slow you down for the safety of others.

With its roomy interior the Fit will easily accommodate four men my size (6 feet tall, 225 lbs full clothed). 4x225 = 900 lbs. Add a little cargo, and 1000 lbs is easily reached. Can 1000 lbs be safely transported in the Fit?
It is a small car and I'm sure with that much weight the suspension will be taking their toll. It could affect braking and handling.

As a pilot I know that if you fly a plane 1 lb over the limit, even in perfect conditions, and you get into an accident, they will hose you.

I don't know if this is something lawyers look at, but if you get into an accident and you're over the recommended weight limit it is something that could be brought up in court. Especially if it's something like you couldn't stop in time.

The Fit's brakes aren't super-stoppy even with no weight in the car.

But I think the biggest issue would be the complaining if you stuck 4 225 lb people into a Fit. I drove a 6'7" colleague last month. He sat in the front with the seat all the way back. Still, his legs were cramped and he had to tilt the seat back to keep his head off the ceiling. If it weren't raining I would've stuck him out of the sunroof.
