51R battery in 2016 EX

I was looking with dismay at all the 51R mods for earlier models. Looks like a total PIA. So I lifted the hood and measured my 2016 EX and it appears a 51R battery will fit with no modifications? Can this be right, or am I overlooking something?

I got the physical dimensions for a Walmart 51R battery on their website.

51R L-9.4", W-5.1", H-8.8"

151R L-7.4", W-4.9", H-8.9"

According to my tape measure it should fit with none of the cutting and other hoops to jump through. Anyone else drop a 51R straight in to their 3rd Gen Fit?

BTW, I did a search and got a million threads. I searched just this forum and got zero hits, so here I am.

From what I recall reading I think the only real issue is the battery tray underneath. It's sized to fit the smaller battery and will have to be removed for a larger battery.

On my GD I trimmed the ends of the tray so the battery could extend out, so its still got some support..

Well, I ordered a Bosch Platinum 51R, so I guess I'll find out. Looking at the battery plate it should fit with no mods. The stock 151R is only filling about 2/3 the length. I bought my EX used, so maybe someone already swapped out the battery plate? I'll post pics once I get the opportunity. Thanks!

If anybody cares, the Bosch 51R dropped in perfectly. Absolutely no mods or compromises. It actually fits BETTER than the original 151R since the battery tray was too long. The cable terminals are the correct size and connected to the posts as designed.

If this wasn't added by the original owner, maybe Honda is using 51R trays in the newer Fits.It might make financial sense to not have to manufacture separate parts across models. I dunno, I'd be interested if any other 2016 EX owners have the same (too long) battery tray.

Wonder if it shares a part from a Civic or Accord or something? If you ever have it out post the part number up off the tray.. It might work for other uses..

Thanks for testing this out. Can you give the Part # or link to the Bosch 51R you used? I'm nearing the 3 year mark and want something to reference when my battery finally gives up.

And of course:

Yes! I do care and thank you for reporting that it fits. On my 2017, when I popped the hood for the first time, the first thing I noticed was the undersized battery. And that it looked like the battery box was designed for a larger one.

And of course:

Bosch Platinum Series AGM Battery Group, Size 51R

  • Part #: 51R440BAGM
Pretty sure it's a re-badged Exide Edge if that's easier to find in your area.

The Bosch is on sale at Pep Boys for $135

I'm working on some pics

Sounds like the same deal as my 2016. I noticed that my headlights are brighter and steadier now. My original battery was a year older than yours.

The 51R is a standard battery size which should be available just about everywhere. I saw it this morning on the shelf at my Wal Mart. The only thing to watch out for is that different stores carry different brands of this battery and the dimensions may be very slightly different which may or may not make a difference.

Good to know. I'm not going to replace mine yet as I've only had the car a month. (I made the dealership put in a brand new battery when I bought the car) When I replace the battery eventually it is good to know the 51R size fits perfectly.

Yeah, I almost bought one when I was in Walmart, but chickened out because I wasn't sure it would fit. Later I decided what the heck, I can always return it. I saw the Bosch at Pep Boys on sale so I got that one instead.

I found that when I was comparing prices I could input my car as a 2016 Honda Accord EX and get the different 51R batteries.

If your battery looks too short for the tray, I bet it's exactly like mine.

51R drops right in to 2015 Fit EX.

Yes the poll is indeed two different questions. Thanks for the input everybody. I bought the NAPA 51R. No modifications were necessary, but the nagative terminal has to be turned at a slight angle. Even if it did touch anyrhing it is ground anyways so no harm. No problems with the tray, hold downs, or sleeve around the battery. The battery I used is 500 CCA and after the online and Milutary discount came to $110. Best deal I could find.

Confirmed. 51R Drop in fit for my 2015 EX. Apparently some have a shorter tray. Mine had plenty to spare so if your tray is longer than your 151R you're good to go. Heres a pic. Drop in fit. 2015 GK

The tray is obviously designed for the 51R size. Even the battery tie-down appears to be sized for it. Could anybody in non-US markets chime in as to what battery size is OEM for their market? Are we lucky ones in the US the only ones to get the dinky toy battery or is everybody gifted one from the factory in your region?

I had to modify my battery tray to fit the Costco Kirkland Signature 51R battery. And just like Rontiki's photo, the battery tied down looks the same.

Checking the tray in our '15 LX (January build, iirc), it's sized to fit the 151, no additional room for a larger battery, would have to do some hacking, but am definitely up for the idea - hacking at plastic ain't nothing.
