Summer tires for 09 sport (Yokohama at a good price?)

Just got my tax refund back so it's time to buy new tires! Summer ones that is. I had the original factory ones for summer and they were kind of crappy. I use Bridgestone for winter and they are fine.

I have a manual 2009 Honda fit sport. The Yokohama Avid Ascend tires sound amazing but I still would like some more opinions. The best deal I could find was $104 a tire but that doesn't include installation.
I'm a sort of broke college grad so saving money is awesome but I'm willing to spend money on GOOD tires and have them last and be good for my car. But if I can find good tires at a cheaper price I'd be very happy. Ant advice would be great.

Btw I am definitely looking for good summer tires. I'm I'm upstate NY and we get so much ice and snow. I'd rather have great winter tires and switch them out than have so-so all season tires.

Last year I ended up settling for Nitto Neo Gens because I had a friend who has a hook up. Definitely do not settle just because of price alone, I should've researched more.

Plenty of good options in 205/50/16 . I run the Kumho Ecsta 4X and it has plenty of grip.
It's leaps and bounds better then the stock Dunlops.

I would go for the Kumho or the Conti DW or DWS.The Avid acsend is a LRR eco friendly all season tire thats more for mileage.Trust me there are several UHP all season tires that perform as good as summer tires from a couple years ago.

Both the Kumho and Conti DW are less then $100.00 a tire from Tirerack

The Avid Ascends just fell to $99/tire on Tire Rack. Should I still look at something else? You say that it's mostly for mileage...is that bad? I do want to get the best mpg I can get. I do a fair bit of highway driving and this will likely increase in the future as well.

better mpg is always better but the Avid Ascend is not a summer tire and may not give you the grip you want.

This tire was designed with mpg in mind and I'm sure it's better then the tires your Fit came with but there are lots of better options if you want a summer tire.

I like the Conti DW and Kumho because they give you the best of both worlds. If you plan to stick with stock size 185/55/16 you are limited to maybe 3-4 tires at most.

move up to the 205/50/16 and you have a lot of options in both A/S and summer.

Are there any disadvantages to going with the 205/50/16 size over the actual size? Mpg or otherwise?

Are you saying that the avids won't be good in rain?

No disadvantage going to the 205.This size is a option for the Fit that works out because it is so close to the 185/55 in diameter, weight ect

I actually noticed a 1-2 mpg increase in mpg over the stock Dunnies. The Ascend should be good in the wet and from the reviews I've seen it is also a very capable tire when cornering.

My main reason for going to the 205 was more choices and also having a bigger contact patch.I have upgraded to Swift springs and Progress RSB on my 2012 sport.

Here is a review of the Ascend from a Prius owner that may help you out. Also check out the Fit Eco section here at FF

We have had improved mileage, better handling, much improved ride, with Ecopia EP422s in 205/50 over the stock Tourenza 185/55.

I'd wait before buying tires. Look on your local Craig'sList or other forum and I would imagine you could find a set of tires on wheels for your budget. That way, you could avoid the expense of mounting and balancing tires twice a year.

Locally, there are always people selling either a summer or winter set of tires and wheels because they sold their car or it was involved in an accident. Just ask to test fit a wheel before purchasing if you are not certain about the width and offset, and if there are any signs of damage, ask to be able to have the wheels spun to see whether they are true.
