Unknown offset measurement?

Is there an effective way of measuring the offset of a rim with an unknown offset?

I would think you can just find out where the center width of the rim is and just try to measure it with a ruler or measurement tape to the hub mounting surface?

Is there a better way?

I think that is the easiest way.
