Wood floors in a Fit..... WHAT??
#61
If you already own a jigsaw - it shouldn't cost you more than $70 even if you get the nicest of wood. If you find some nice flooring on sale or get some laminate florring then I would guess around $40.

Very cool idea...I like it!
I think this would especially be nice if you have a "themed" car and use it for show with some nice graphic art or something.
I like the black stained look a lot-if I were to do it, I'd prolly do one like that and then maybe do some graphic overlay.

wow dude, I love it. hate to say it but I'm probably going to copy you and fab up a set myself (have a few boxes of tiger wood left over from my place).
I've dabbled with wood car bits before, heres a sample

heres the matched set

I was also doing the dash inserts, in butcher block, here was my practice peice

except the final peice is being done in red palm (been aging this block for about 5 years now)

Since I work for a hardwood flooring distributor, I had been thinking of doing something similar.
My preference is going to be to use unfinished 3/8" select walnut, and stain it with a walnut stain for a nice dark look with the grain still showing. Instead of completely covering the back, I'd rather cut it to fit in place of the spare cover. Hopefully, even 3/8" flooring will be somewhat stronger than the piece of carpet covered cardboard Honda used.
Inspite of my dislike of bamboo flooring , it doesn't look bad, nice job.
A couple ideas for keeping stuff from sliding around.
From what I can tell from your pics, it looks like you used prefinished flooring. If so, after you put your artwork on it, and if you have a steady hand, you could lay a tiny bead of clear silicon down along each beveled groove. As long as it was slightly above the floor itself, it should keep anything larger than the width of a board from sliding all over, and you should still be able to see any artwork just fine.
If you dont do the artwork, you could just go get some window screen spline, the round rubber kind, in the smallest diameter available, and glue it into each bevel. If you can get it in black, should make for a nice contrast against the flooring.

The only thing I see here is a catastrophe waiting to happen. People put wood in cars with no consideration of where the material will end up in a serious rear end collission. Possibly wedged between somebody's lumbar vertabrae. Please don't take this the wrong way, I congratulate your effort and workmanship, but the safety concern jumps out at me, especially with a full wood floor sitting less that a foot from the spines of both front occupants (as in the photos in the opening post).
I see these things because I've been in a rear end collission where two people left in body bags.

Yea ur right a pen left in the car when u crash is a missle waiting to go through some one. Trust me i have seen pics of this. But i like the idea alot. Would i do it maybe down the road but for me i rather just buy a rug like im about to for the back. But i also have a dog in mine alot so the wood might not be great. I can see my dog loosing traction in the back on turns and bam right into the side of the car LOL. But a cool thing would be like someone said white with some sort of design on there than a clear cloat over it.

Time to add a lamp, wingback chair, and a wood-burning stove.

The only reason to do it - I like it a lot. With the grass mat it would be like a little rug, or would it be a place mat???

Wood looks nice...
but I wouldn't do it to my car...
But it got me to thinking...Suppose I took an old shower curtain and put those self-stick vinyl tiles on it and cut it to fit?
It would be waterproof, lightweight, and a custom fit...
Next time I am at Home Depot, I will check into the tile section...I have some tiles at home, but they aren't the color I would want in the back of the car because they wouldn't match...
Something like this faux marble pattern...
Dynamix Vinyl Tile 3023, Home Dynamix Flooring, Marble Vinyl Tile, Dynamix Vinyl Floor Tiles by Home Dynamix, Dark Gray Vinyl Flooring, Black And White Vinyl Tiles by Home Dynamix - DynamixFlooring.com
I wonder what I could use to put around the edges?

Man, I enjoyed your creativity, because modifying is all about letting your imagination flow i guess. No matter if it is not your style. I like all the effort people put.
I don't get it. then how would you do your fit? turbo charged it? then people would say, I hate silvia style in a honda. carbon it? i hate racing look style in a honda. Coz originally honda is just a city car. how much weight r u trying to save man?? what about those who whack a k20a into a fit? then you would hate them as well for having an integra style? be real..
for me, i like hellaflush, not coz it started from a veedub, but coz i just like the fat stance.
no offense man, but my biggest pet peeve right now is vw style in a honda. i HATE IT! it angers me. hella flush is not hella cool, rubbin and dubbin is not good for your car and overzealous style is not the way to go. i hate the idea. adding weight. grrrr. but like i said, no offense plz.
