Pioneer Ipod adaptor or cable?

I am confused as to why there is a need for the Pioneer Ipod box since it takes up space compared to the Pioneer cable to ipod cable. I want to make sure if I just get the cable I will still get full function of my ipod from my headunit which is the AVH-P6000dvd. Anyone know?

Certain models may need some protocol adapters for the interface. I know that in Kenwood's case, the older models needed the protocol adapter where the newer models had the capacity built in.
