Opinions of Kenwood, KPC-438U has front mounted USB
While browsing Best Buy equipment, I spied the Kenwood KDC-MP438U see here from Crutchfield Kenwood KDC-MP438U CD receiver at Crutchfield.com
which was the only one available with a front USB input regardless of price. To me this sounds like a highly desirable feature where I can just stick in a USB memory stick. Any opinions of this HU or Kenwoods in general? The last time I was shopping for a HU was way back in 1998 when I compared a Kenwood and a Sony. I ultimately chose the Sony for a warmer sound and better radio reception but it also was a more expensive unit. I see this Kenwood has lower voltage pre-amp outputs but this is not a problem for now as I just intend to keep everything stock and replace the HU only. Would the difference between a lower and higher voltage preamp output be of big concern should I decide to add an amp later?
Also a couple of other newbie questions. Many units claim IPOD control via a rear USB connection. I assume that must mean a cable has to be ported to the front somewhere? Also does this mean it will only support IPODs or will it recognize a music loaded USB memory stick? Also I see some brands state 14 Watts per channel while others state 22. Is there a real difference between the two?

the Pioneer 4000UB has the USB port at the rear and you can run a USB extension into your glovebox so you don't whack the USB stick and break the faceplate.
I've isntalled bunches of both, I'll have to give the upper hand to the Kenwood for features, sound and ease of use.
I find the Pioneer looks "cleaner" though and dosn't ahve the USB stck poking out at you

Thanks for the reply. I'm still thinking I might like the convenience of a front mounted USB port. Upon doing more research at Crutchfields, would it be worth my while to pay ten dollars more for the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X492? I'm wondering too if it's worth investingating a HU with a build in HD tuner.

Sadly no HD tuner but a 2 year warranty, better A/D converters and higher pre-amp voltages so yes I think I'll get this model instead.
