Engine bay heat insulator DIY - Help me find.. :(

I was searching on yahoo for a Transmission Cooler and ran upon a Honda Jazz forum in Australia. There was this guy that had posted a very simple DIY project where he removed the plastic engine cover and purchased a specific insulation through home depot. He lined all the metal areas with it and covered it all up with the plastic engine cover again, so it looks original. He said its the best DIY he has ever done and has reduced engine heat significantly and costed him less than 5 bucks to do. He can put his hand on the covering and feel absolutely no heat anymore. He then drills some holes through the plastic to allow the heat to rise through rather than being trapped underneath.

If anybody runs into his thread, please post it here as I would really like to try this. I will also keep looking and update everyone if I do run into it.

Andy

Exclamation Hmmmmm

Doesn't sound so good to me - you're just trapping heat inside the engine then
Why does it matter if the covers hot? It'd wrap the exhaust mainfold before I trapped heat into the top end of the engine...

I know the DIY your talking about. That's Claymore on Ausfit -- the same Claymore as here too. He did it to insulate the intake manifold from the engine and to keep the heat from it from warming up the intake air charge. Here's the link:

yeah I don't see a point in this.. its like cooking your engine and giving it less of a chance to get rid of all the heat it produces.. heat + hp = BAD

Smile I like claymore's DIY but probably will not DIM

Looks to me like claymore is keeping the exhaust manifold heat away from the engine and specifically directing it away from the air intake. As he says in the followup - too much trouble for some people (like me) but seems pretty cool

Even so, I wonder if its worthwhile to do if any bit can help the engine reduce heat and wear. I don't mind the time consumption, as I find these things are fun to do merely to test the outcome.
