valve clearance

3 stupid questions...
1) On an automatic do I keep the car in Park when turning the engine clockwise?
2) On the diagram there are 8 arrows pointing to adjusting screw locations. But there are 16 screws. Do we adjust only these 8 screws and leave the other 8 alone?
3) From left (timing chain) to right...what is the order # of the pistons?

1) yes
2) diagram is for an eight valve i-dsi, one adjustment screw per valve, thus eight screws. If you have 16 valves, you do all 16.
3) easiest way to think of this... if this engine was mounted in a rear wheel drive vehicle, which end of the engine would be #1?

The frequency necessity for a valve adjustment must have to do with how the car is driven. If the engine is frequently driven to the redline and driven hard in general the valves are going to get out of adjustment faster.

I adjusted my valves yesterday! All exhaust valves were in the .005 - .007 range and all intake valves were in the .008 - .009 range... Now all Exhaust valves are at .012 and all intake valves are at .006!! No more annoying idle missfire \ backfire and it pulls stronger!!! Can't wait to see if she is gonna give me more MPG!!

Just did mine tonight. Exhaust valves were off the chartedly tight...! Intake weren't so bad. Fire my car up, and it idle pretty quietly.
Wow, this is crazy, i've regained so much of the lost low end torque, and the engine rev up much easier from 4000 rpm and up!

Well, it's that time of year again... did them for the second time at 30k miles today. One hour and fifty minutes from tool box open to tool box close. This was with a bit of handicap too... since I'm not technically allowed to work on my car here, I did it in the dark garage with the assistance of a 23w light bulb.
Couldn't believe it, they had already changed from where they were before. No wonder I've been stuck at 32 mpg. I don't know how but the left #3 intake got down to about .004".... ick. Rest went wide. All the exhausts were under .009" already, some well under. Guess I should stop driving it like the mach 5, eh?
Really kind of odd to me. The d16y8 would try to open all its clearances.
Trying 0.007" in / 0.012" ex this time.

I am glad I found this thread. Thanks artieman for the write.
My GD3 has developed a noticable tick with 82,000km (~50,000miles). It is obviously valves but the strange part is the tick has come and gone over the last 10,000km, but now seems set to stay. The information here seems rather consistant from car to car so I too will be checking the valve lash on a more regular basis. now i just need to find the time to takle this project.
