building homemade highrise header.

well my plans are to build a header similar to this
but obviously for a fwd rather than rwd.

here is my progress so far

reason for this design is i'm trying to obtain a runner length of 35"

here are the spec's i'm trying for. 1.37" id runners 35"s long with a 15 degree merge collector to a 2" collector diameter 13"s long. this should be tuned for maximum tq around 4500-5000rpms and peak hp around 6000rpms. i'll try and update as it comes together.

any reccomendations are or ideas are always appreciated.

got another runner 1/2 way completed.

got the third runner 1/2 way done. started the last runner but I have to revise it. loosing at least 5 inches=no bueno

that is one nice fabrication table. i fabbed up a set of headers for my fit too but i just copied the j's design and made the lengths a half inch differant according to the firing order of each cylinder. i plan on fabbing a turbo manifold too later on after i get my t1r kit. im not a fan of cast iron anything. what alloy you making this out of?

these are just 16 gauge aluminized mild steel. have had them laying around for years. used them as dump tubes for 38mm wastegates when I was big into fabbing. I was also going to build a turbo manifold but I decided against it for now. I always use either 1.25" sch 10 304L stainless els or 1.5" sch10 304L and sch40(for the heavy turbo's )

I also plan on having it ceramic coated once its complete.

nice. well i cant wait to see it complete. i just used some spare 316L 12 gauge elbows we had laying around at the shop i work at. my boss is ultra cool and helped me figure out how to build it.

oh yeah there's something that i just remembered. the exhaust flange is NOT symmetrical, so make sure the right side is facing the engine before you start welding it up.

oh really? thats good to know. you know which is which? i'm actually just trying to get the runners close right now before I pull the car apart and do the final test fitting and adjustments.

well not really, all i can tell you is that the top mounting holes are off set a little bit, just tack everything into place so you can flip the flange around if it's wrong. you have a 50% chance of getting it right! lol

Maybe I am missing something, but I gotta ask; How are you going to fit that header into that tiny little bit of space behind the engine?

tiny bit of space? wow there is a grip of room? you want to see tiny amount of space try working on a 300zx or a audi s4 bi turbo. or try cramming a 1.15a/r t4/t67 with 4" downpipe and tial 44mm wastegate with 1.75" dumptube in a honda civic. lol now thats maximizing space. the smallest amount of room on the fit is 8 inches(the brake lines on the firewall) the further you go down the more room you get.

I will take your word on it that it will fit; but I just rememeber gashing my knuckles many times and having a tought time getting tools to fit between things when I swapped out my header. The other thing to watch would be how much that engine moves around, if you build everything with only slight tolerances you might end up with it banging into the firewall everytime you accelerate.

if that were to happen just get stiffer engine mounts to help performance even more.

alot of that could be the tools being used. flex head ratchets, multiple length extensions, and wobble sockets make life alot easier. yeah i'm not going to hug the firewall by any means. the engine should rotate under accel/decel more so than push rearward. so my subframe/tunnel clearance will need to be the most accurate. but I guess theres no telling untill its finished.

Any chance you could fab me up a dual exhaust manifold for a 346 ci flathead Cadillac engine? The only one i have ever seen was done by Pinkys Rod Shop and I don't have a million dollars to get that one! Its nice to see some real fabricators talking shop around here...

honestly without a car it would be near impossible. I have done that once with a downpipe and it took 4 or 5 revisions to get it to fit right. totally not worth the headache. not to mention i'm just your average joe with a full time job. I just play around in my leisure time.

couple new pics up
