+1 for rust... That's an interesting place for it to form... I guess you could ride it out, or sand it down and paint it with engine/exhaust paint...

I can understand the rust on the welds, the pipe rusting is kind of surprising though. I clean mine out every week or so and polish it up with metal cleaner. Hopefully that will delay the rusting...

Sure is rust and you can see in the photo why it happens. Take a close look and you can see WATER in the pipe. In this case it may be from washing the car but it happens all the time with the engine running. There is moisture in engine exhaust from condensation. Hot wet exhaust gasses pass the colder metal of the exhaust system and it's like a sauna condensing out the water onto your exhaust system parts making conditions conducive to rust every time you run the engine especially when you just run short trips and the exhaust doesn't heat up enough to burn off the moisture.

Some sandpaper and "elbow grease" should get rid of the rust and then a couple coats of heat resistant paint will work wonders but it will come back eventually.

Aren't the Tanabe Exhausts made of Stainless Steel? I've been through two winters here in Calgary with snow + salt and lots of car washes and my Fujitsubo doesn't even have a hint of rust on it. I would definitely contact Tanabe about it, but they are non existent here. You will probably be better off calling them.

If it was made of stainless steel, there wouldn't be rust on it. So, it isn't SS.

Yes I'm aware that if it was stainless, than it wouldn't rust, but just pointing out that I'm pretty sure Tanabe boasts that it uses stainless for their exhausts:

Tanabe Racing Development, USA - Medalion Touring

"The full SUS304 stainless MEDALION TOURING features a slim-line oval canister, and a special dual wall, angle-cut tip."

Highest Grade SUS304 Construction
Tanabe was one of the first Japanese aftermarket companies to create full SUS304 stainless steel exhaust systems many years ago. The highest grade SUS304 stainless is used on all systems for maximum durability, as well as lightweightedness. Our experience in developing SUS304 systems has allowed us to reach a high level of craftsmanship in this field.
