exhaust....

exhaust question...changing just the muffler or exhaust...(not all the piping) that does nothing but make it louder right? no hp gains?

changing just the muffler on the exhaust OR the piping on the exhaust can both increase power. it all depends on the size of the motor and the size of the piping and the muffler piping, and design of the components. an aftermarket cat-back exhaust (exhaust upgrade from the catalytic converter and back) usually gives more power than just a muffler upgrade (or an axle-back exhaust, which is an exhaust upgrade from the rear axle and back). that's why a cat-back will cost more than the muffler or axle-back alone, plus it's just much cooler (not in temperature). hope that helps!

yeah helps some...i was planning on getting custom piping at 2 1/4 at a shop after i pick out some headers, and gettin a good exhaust tip...do they have any good universal ones that i could get now and use now/after i change it to 2 1/4 ...or should i just wait and get it all done at once?

in my opinion, it would be better to get an exhaust specifically designed for the fit, instead of getting an exhaust pipe custom-bent for your car. the performance should be better because the bends in an aftermarket exhaust system are mandrel-bent (a lot smoother) and will let the exhaust flow out very smoothly. this is better than having the people at the shop bend a pipe all over the place to fit your car, because that would leave lots of turbulence inside your exhaust pipe. and smoother flow = better for exhausts. it will be a lot more money though, if you buy an aftermarket exhaust system, compared to getting a custom exhaust. if all you want is the sound, then get the custom exhaust, but know that the quality won't be at the same level of an exhaust system and you might find yourself wanting a better exhaust later down the road. just my advice!

o yeah, if you get custom piping at the shop, you can just bring in the universal muffler whenever, since they just weld pieces on here and there (leaves more room for rust and exhaust leaks, and leaves the inside of the exhaust pipe rough too, i think).

...i know plenty of people who get em custom done. and love it...they can match anything you can buy. bending pipe is easy. if get it custom can get it with as few bends as possible...if not just as few as any one specifically for it. and as long as you get it done at a good shop, shouldnt have any problems with rust or leaks. they can test for leaks... thanks for the info though. ill look into getting a muffler here soon before i get the pipes done.

has anybody here gone 2 1/4 all the way around? whats the stock size on the fit? i'd hate to get 2 1/4 all the way and it be too big and lose power instead of gaining.

Smile Gains

I installed my Aspec CAI n my Megan Racing Axle Back. The gains were good! A totally different car. Our exhaust system has a good set up because from headers on back to the tip....it all bolts!
As far as sound from just the axle back...yes. But maybe because I shift sometimes at 5/6 grand . Definetly a tone to an axle back! Hope this helps.

Peace

ic, what i was trying to say is that when a shop custom bends the pipes, the method they use to bend results in the diameter of the pipes decreases and changes shapes, as opposed to mandrel-bent pipes that you see on brand-name aftermarket exhaust systems (which are shaped using a method that allows the diameter to remain constant). a constant diameter will be better for performance, if that's what you're aiming for. whatever you choose, good luck and let us know how it goes!

You would probably see some gains if you ran a straight through muffler vs the baffled OEM muffler. But of course it would be better to go with the piping. Why dont you go with an axle back like the Tanabe Touring. It might be easier then taking yours in to get welded up.
