JDM Wiper Mod.
#83
I did this mod this afternoon, but I broke one of the two black "concentric" clips by the latch trying to figure out how to reinstall it. I left it with the middle pin part still depressed and tried see if it just returned to normal after pushing it in, but 2 of the split sections broke off (the ones that I now see that keep the pin from being pushed back to the original flush position--doh). For the other one, I forgot what I did exactly, but I tried to reset it before pushing it back in and it went in cleanly. The hatch is a little insecure in one of the bottom corners now. I'm going to be on the lookout for some kind of replacement anchor for that. I assume the way to install it is to remove the inside pin, put the broad part in, then lock it by pushing the pin through... anyone care to correct me?
I didn't have to take off the wiper arm or take the motor out. The white gear fell out after I pulled the "pinion", since I'm working on it with it in the hatch above me, but I had no problems putting it back the original way, since mine only has 2 holes and one's dirty and one has a marks from a pin being broken off. The "metal pivot" is hard to move from the motor side with wiper arm still attached, but you can just move the wiper arm to move it.
The rear wiper is now basically reversed, the resting and limit points swapped, but the sweep area is the same and the initial sweep pushes all the initial gunk downwards, rather than up and to the side. Can't think of a downside to this mod besides the risk of breaking stuff in the process of doing it. Great mod tutorial, thanks!

Nothing like a stiffy in the morning when it is covered in snow and ice.

oh yeah!
i have done the mod, very good write up!
easy, took me 25minutes, the hatch panel dropped on the tarmac, and injured from deep scratches!
be careful when removing the hatch panel!
be careful when repositioning the pinion! the greasy gear will drop to the ground!

+1 on this!!
I did this mod this morning when it was only ~35 degrees out. I wasn't quiiiiiiite careful enough and cracked the middle of the panel! Wasn't thinking it'd be brittle, but... it was a 'duh' moment for sure xD
Love the look, and the crack isn't very noticeable, so that's good. But moral of the story is to make sure you use a long flat-head screwdriver to apply pressure right at each clip.

Then I saw this...
I know what happened to all the laid-off Pontiac designers who specialize in bolting tacky plastic cladding, scoops, and general tasteless crap to otherwise normal looking cars!
I guess this sells there. Any surprise that when Toyota built the Matrix together with Pontiac, the Vibe is the version that was sent back home to Japan.

good write up. very easy mod, just did it to my girls 2010 base model. took me about 45 minutes because i dropped the big white gear, didn't notice the bit of dirt that jammed the gears..... (almost burnt out the motor while i wondered why it wouldn't turn) had to take it back apart and clean it.
i also washed and waxed it.

Thx for writeup and tips fit freaks did the modtonight. Agood tip for removing the hatch panel is once u get the 2 plastic fastener nuts off, the panel is held on by several plastic fasteners, all u gotta do is pull one side of the panel until it pops out. I c why ppl would feel weary cuz I thought I was gonna crack something!

I got all the way to the part with the 4 screws and spend one whole hour on the damn things and only got 1 off. I tried WD-40 and the lot, could not get the other 3 off and I had to stop b4 I damage the screws more. Any suggestions? or am I stuck with a horizontal wiper

Depends on how damaged they are. If you can still get a bite on them a bit of heat [propane torch] might help. Just need to take care and not set the lot on fire. Marvel Mystery Oil in a spray can works as a great penetrating oil. Just need to let it soak in. The WD might do it if you try again in a few days.

I just did this mod. Super easy on the 2010 fit. Didn't even have to take off the wiper, just turn it up when you are ready to reset the pinion and it falls everything into place. I'd like to also say be careful when taking off the hatch cover. I broke a few clips on the inside.
