I have a four-poster, but you are correct, for your price point you won't be able to lift the wheels. I still do suspension and brake work on the ground...

If you only want to do service (not car storage), a low-rise scissors lift might be just the ticket:

Panther Lifts - Product » 6,000 LB. LOW-RISE PAD LIFT

If you can use a low-rise ramp lift, I have friends that swear by the kwiklift.
KwikLift portable, drive-on, low-level car, truck and forklift lifts

It is possible to buy hand-operated hydraulic jacks that fit between the ramps for jacking the car off it's wheels.... one friend has these and if you want, I could get the brand. Might be expensive though.

thanks, I have been looking at all kind of lifts. I have 3 cars and two vans, so I try to do as much maint myself as possible. I am not too interrested in storage.......my garage is only 8 foot tall.......is it even possible to store two cars that way in so little space????

In light of that, a two post or a scissor lift would be ideal. I saw the Kwiklift and I don't think it will meet all my needs.....

.
If you had two low-slung cars to store, and got creative with how the garage door opens, you might be able to get two cars in.

Some garages, while low, are "deep" enough to move the lift forward. Another alternative is to have your overhead garage door run along the ceiling.

All it takes is money.

One thing to remember about a two post lift is that they need to be anchored securely. Also, they can present "challenges" with opening doors and such....

So, for maintenance work, I'd go with the scissors. Look at the specs and make sure whatever you buy goes high enough for those vans.

Wow thats pimp... I really want one looks like it'd be able to help with more than just brakes and rims, that'd make suspension and some exhaust work a piece of cake..
