The "I should have done it myself" Thread

Took my car in today to get some springs put on. They quoted me 150 and i left them the car. I just got a phone call from them telling me that because of the "Time" it took to put the springs on they are charging me 300.00. On top of that they told me that during the install one of the mechanic's wrenches slipped and gouged a 1" hole into my f**kin fender.

I basically told the guy that he's taking my car to the Honda dealership to get it re-painted.

I just bought the car not 1 week ago.

Should have sucked it up and done it myself.

Sympathy is appreciated, telling me I'm an idiot is not. That is all

wow, bummer. they should not charge you at all considering they damage your car.

sorry for your bad luck. i'm going to be posting a very easy to understand DIY with lots of pictures for spring installation so hopefully people will be able to avoid this type of problem in the future.

that would be great, I couldn't find an understandable guide to do it myself and i didn't want to do it for the first time on my brand new car without a good guide.

I'm sure that would help a lot of people

They did give me a choice saying they wouldn't charge me for the installation or they would get it repainted. I have to seee how bad the damage is first, then ill report back

i didn't know they could quote you one price and then charge you another without your pre-approval? maybe that only applies to parts costs, i'm not sure. but that is lame they messed up your car! that's the main reason i'm so hesitant to let anybody do anything with my car. sucks it happened but i hope everything gets worked out with you on top.

damn, that really does suck man. I would actually contact your local authorities. The shop can and most likely will place a mechanic's lein on something you own if you do not pay the ammount they are demanding. Good luck, that shop sucks balls.

I would have thought that after lowering 4-5 or more fits, i would have done a DIY

Unless the shop called and got an authorization from you for the extra they are charging, you only have to pay the original amount. They can't do the work and then call and say it's more? If they do not fix the car, and stick with the "Orginal Quote" Go the the BBB and the Bureau of Automotive Repair.

see this is where they got me. They said it was 150 for the SPRING install. They did not quote the "extra labor" or the "camber bolt" install. Which personally is total bulls**t but ya know. Anyway, I just got back from the shop and it is not NEAR as bad as they said it was. The guy on the phone made it sound like it was a huge drilled hole in my fender. Its just a deep scratch.

I basically told him that I would pay him for the install and he would get the scratch fixed by Honda, which is good because Honda's quote was close to 400 for that body work. Anyway, I took some pics of the scratch, and of the lowered ride...and despite the s**t I've been through today, I'm still REALLY happy with the out come of my my baby:

Here's the scratch:

Well for all the heck they put you through the drop looks really nice! What a difference it makes. The damage is not that bad but I would not want them working on my car if they do that type of thing very often. Sorry you've had a bad day but thankfully it is going to be repaired and your riding on a slammed Fit! Yeah!

Yea that shop should be reported they can't charge u more with out asking u first. Dam i was going to have a shop do mine when they come in to. But now i might wait and just save some money and do it myself. On base we have a hobby shop that has every tool and lifts that is cheap u just pay like $5 an hour. Does any one know how long it takes to do springs. I have done many mods myself on cars in my sig but never did springs.

skunk 2. and thank you all for the comments, I agree and I'm pretty happy with the result. Little rubbing here and there in the front but I expected it when I bought the 17's with that offset.
