Gm
I was a GM fan for years and when your "check engine" light went on and Mr goodwrench couldn't make it go away you went into the dash and unhooked the bulb. It's no wonder I drive a Honda after having that "great GM feeling" so many times. Unhook the bulb associated with the emission system warning light. It's your car, of course, but I'll bet that annoying light won't be the last of the "issues" caused by your "shortcut".

fine lesson
This is an excellent lesson. If it works DON'T FIX IT!
Is $685 just for the part?
If so then it could be an incredibly meaningful lesson assuming the owner ever hopes to sell the vehicle and get a decent price for it.

You'll need a defouler for a cat delete or you have a cel gauranteed. The defouler spaces the secondary o2 sensor further away from the exhaust stream "tricking" the ecu into thinking the cat is still there doing it's job. For the most part it should work, but it's not a guarantee that the cel won't pop back up.
