Constant speed "stutter"

This thread was a great help in fixing the dreadful problem like all the previous posters were experiencing. Big thanks to everyone who contributed!
I have a 1.3 '06 Jazz Sport AT (that's what it's called here in the Philippines) and I've had it for at least a year and a half. It has 64k km now for an almost 8-yr old car. I've had the problem for almost a year and no one from the dealership can come up a fix so I did an extensive research and found this forum

Since I don't have money to spend for a new set of coil packs (mine has 8 packs), I just cleaned them using a wire brush. There wasn't much to clean so that did not take much time. I also set the plug gaps to 0.35mm.
While at it, I removed the EGR valve (#1) and cleaned the bottom holes using a carb cleaner. The carbon deposits on that thing was so thick that I needed to scrape 'em out using a dull/flat screw driver. I also removed the Passage Comp. (#2) and soaked the internals with the carb cleaner. You may need a flashlight to see the internals of the Passage Comp. You may want to clean the 2 holes right between the #5 bolts too. I soaked the parts with deposits and left them for a few minutes before scraping.

After I put back the parts that I cleaned, I did the Idle Learn Procedure (ILP). The gas consumption was a bit bad for the first week (7-8 km/L only) but I guess that's normal since the ECU is still learning my driving style. I'm on my second fill now and it sure looks promising.
Here's the summary of what I did:
1. unhooked battery (reset ECU)
2. cleaned coil packs
3. set spark plug gap to 0.35mm
4. cleaned EGR and EGR Passage Comp holes
5. Idle Learn Procedure
I'm a noob and this is the first time I've ever touched engine parts so it took me 7 hours to complete everything. This did not cost me anything too. Sorry for the long write up. I hope this can help my fellow Fitfreaks.

2008 Honda fit stalls & sputters on start up
I started to have issues at 70K. Bought to my mechanic & he found nothing. It got worse over the next few months. Stopped at red lights, starting up at different times of the day . The weather cold or warm it didn't matter it was random. I started to feel unsafe in my car. I bought back to my mechanic again & he did some research and said it could be valves and it would cost
$300-$400. A big BUT: He wasn't sure that it would be fixed! Everyone was telling me to bring it to the Honda Dealer so I did and told them this is
what It could be. Valves adjusted, some spark plugs replaced and $425 later the car runs much better, but every once in a a while it makes the same noises and has stalled out once in 2 months since the repair. It makes me
stressed out and it only has 82K. By the way, all during this-no engine or warning light ever went on, the car just made noises and drove crappy. And the Honda dealer said it wasn't the coil packs. Don't know if I can keep this car and I am a Honda lover.

I've been wanting to report the results and I'm very happy to inform everyone that the problem hasn't come back until now. I'm extremely satisfied with the result. The car accelerates much better now and I'm getting better fuel consumption too.

stuuder idle dying misfires
like before said, add me to to the st st studder club
reading more and more about this issue sounds too me my issue
opportunity i had a dying battery got all new coil pack off band {import direct}
from Oreillys still had this problem about once a week then slighty got worse took to mechanic claims misfire change coil coil he gave me garbage upper boot spring was broke off shaking inside, now got my money back for all four pack and have oem hitachi on the way i think this will really determine the issue, I really would hate to say the cause is getting the kwsc put in would be the cause but only a month after it started happening

Just started having this issue with my 07 fit. Really disappointed in the Honda brand. This should be covered as a defect.
The newer Fits seem a lot better but had I read about this problem I think I'd have bought a different vehicle.

Honda Problem
Perhaps some of the Honda company folks on the board ought to comment.
Once we replaced the coil packs with aftermarket ones the problem went away. Of course, that's only been about three years...so who knows if it is going to recur.
It is otherwise a great car, that I do not regret purchasing.

As someone who deals with engineering in similar industries (but not the auto industry), I don't find this to be disturbing or a big deal but I'm OK with doing some simple maintenance things to mitigate this issue - regap the spark plugs at 50K miles, clean the coil pack contacts etc. Also, I understand the challenges of effective engineering in real world environments having lived with bad engineering done by others and a few mistakes on my part as well.
As far as Honda corporate doing something about this - these parts are very reliable consistent with the warranty period so there's no compelling safety or business reason to fix this under a recall. Also, getting the parts and doing the swap is an easy DIY so when mine go, I'll just fix it. The mechanics at the dealerships should definitely be more on top of this as a chronic maintenance issue on these vehicles though.
I've been very impressed with the engineering on these Fits, compared to older cars - SAAB 900, Mercedes W202, almost anything American.

I look at the reliability ratings of other cars from multiple sources and I'm thankful I chose the Fit. The only repair I've taken my Fit to the doctor for was to have the A/C recharged last week, and the car is over five years old. It has asked nothing more from me, but thanks to this forum I know to expect to replace the coil packs and maybe the vent fan motor and resistor. Those parts combined seem cheaper than an extended warranty, which I didn't get, and easy to fix.

to everyone here, who still own their gen1.
Try my solution here: I've completely got rid of the misfire and stuttered. You don't need to buy coil pack or coil boot.

This is a great thing to do as a preventative maintenance procedure to do for peace of mind before a there is a stuttering problem.. You can spend what money you save on a few beers and feel even better about your accomplishment.

After reading through a lot of the comments here I ordered Hitachi coil packs for my 2007 Fit. About $240, an hour turning a wrench, and hours of reading posts here and watching videos to make sure this was the fix needed.
I just replaced all four coils took it for a test drive and not only is the shuddering gone, the car has more power!
Thank you all for the posts here. If the shuddering comes back I'll come back and research some more.

I know I'm resurrecting a very old thread...
I just needed to say thank you and I owe someone a beer.
2007 Fit all of a sudden starts stuttering, especially cruising in 5th. Google search brings me here and I go outside last night and pull the coils. One has a significantly lower resistance than the others. Grease up the plug end and stick 'em all back in with little change. Get on Rock auto and order the denso boot kit for way less than new coils. I throw in a set for my Tundra also. Tundra has been stuttering but I've attributed it to the PO pulling a trailer in OD. I replaced 16 quarts of tranny fluid with synthetic (roughly $170) and no change. No codes on either.
I'm bored tonight so I go pull the honda coils again but this time pull the boots off. A little white corrosion on the springs. Run the wire brush over them and goop em up with dialectic grease at the connections. Plug everything back up and stuttering GONE!
Think to myself, I'm gonna try this on Tundra. They are slightly different (no fuse and short boot) but I lube up what I can on the assumed bad coil and violà. One year of transmission failure fear and I have a real truck again.
Anyone who aided this thread who lives around Rocky Mount can meet me at one of the breweries in town and there is a round on me.

I had a BMW M3 which uses similar ignition coils but the BMW ignition coil boot uses a internal split pipe connector like this one instead of a spring that makes much better contact with the sparkplug than a thin tiny spring wire on our Honda Fit.
No wonder just cleaning the boot spring contact points on both ends helps. Your Hitachi coils are probably not bad at all guys but rather the ignition coil boot needs to be replaced or the internal spring contact points needs to be thoroughly cleaned.

Thanks very much!
Just registered to say a big thank you to all that replied in this thread! My issue was the same. Garage replaced spark plugs, they had no idea what else to do...
This thread gave the solution. I ordered 8 (2*4, different types) for 2-300 euros (can't remember exactly), and replaced them in half an hour. The ones in the back are a little tricky, but still: easy job. Since then, two months ago: runs great, no hiccups at all!
Thanks again, cheers from the Netherlands :-)
