Usually for racing, you shift right before you hit the limiter. I'm almost positive this works for the fit too, but it may not feel like it.

for racing it's generally good to shift at the highest rpm, but there are some exceptions where going that high gives you a drop in power, and it may be optimal to just shift into the next gear to get back into the sweet spot. i dunno about the fit.

Smile Shift Points

Shift points for racing, IMO are around 6,500 RPM. At least from my runs . I guess it would all depend on your mods as well because I was not able to do certain things that I am able to do now. For example my intake, header and axle back allow me to bounce my tach off the rev limiter....making a great shift point...when it goes tata.tata.tata (tach boucing off rev limiter).

Peace......

The computer will let you rev it to 7k, I was running 2 tenths better shifting at 7k than I was at 6500

Smile Shift Points

Quick question, should you wait till the rpm needle bounces off the rev limiter to shift? I was not sure if you should shift just before or as soon as it starts bouncing.

Thx

Definitely do it before you hit the limiter. If you hit the limiter in gear, you'll get some engine braking that will slow you down.

Thanks for the information. I have noticed the engine braking that you had mentioned....guess about 6700/7000 grand is best?!

Thanks again,

Really, stock? I had no idea it was that high. I figured it to be around 6400. Regardless, I still think the fuel cut is too soon, especially in 2nd gear.

as far as the fuel economy part of the question.... i usually shift around 2,500 rpms in every gear to conserve fuel. when at a steady speed, i try to keep the revs between 2,000 and 2,500 (except on the freeway when it is obviously much higher). on hills this doesn't always work. sometimes a drop in gear is neccessary to maintain speed. hope this helps.

If you wait until the limiter activates you are just wasting power and time. Your reaction time from the time you hear the limiter, which is then cutting power, and the time your body reacts and actually changes gears is just letting your engine die and fall out of the power band the whole while you are still thinking about shifting.

I've always thought you shift at your peek torque out put. For drag racing at least, road racing that is probably some thing different. But then again we are dealing with Honda who sacrifices torque for horse power.

If you shift at peak torque you loose time and power because during the actual shifting process the engine RPM fails off and you drop out of the best power band and have to waste time climbing back into the best range. You should shift above peak torque so that during the shift change the engine speed drops INTO the best power range not below it.
