My so-cal friends... i have an audio question.

I just bought a JL sub from my friend, it came with the box and sub in it.

Can i use this with the factory audio system i have?? I'm told to invest in an amp and not a cheap one or it will sound like crap. But after looking around on the forums using the "search" functions. I saw that jason said that a headunit would improve the sound the most. Does this mean headunit without an amp???

I'm lost .... help me. lol

Pretty sure if you got a new head unit, an amp would still be needed. I may have one for sale... 400 watts :P

Yeah ur gonna need an AMP to power that SUB. You can use the stock radio to power it tho. U just need a line-out converter.
Scosche LOC-80 (loc80) - Line-Out Converters - Sonic Electronix
Or go to Fry's or any local stereo shop and they will have something similar.

Depending on your model of JL sub, u gotta get an amp that will be compatible with it... this is one suggestion if you want some nice bass...
Rockford Fosgate R150-2 (r1502) - 2-Channel Car Amplifier Power Amp - Sonic Electronix
Again this is not for INSANE bass, but something to bump and make the stereo sound 10000x better.

Any help just ask.

no, that amp is no good. stick with RF, kicker, alpine. You dont have to spend a million bucks, but dont waste money on bad amps either.

for one amp you can really get away with say a 2ch fosgate unless you're planning on running your entire system off of it. Check craigslist, you can find decent amps that people are willing to show they work before you buy them. just stick with names you know and you should do fine. or if all else fails, ask here or in the ice forum, that is where you'll get serrriiious answers

Word thanks feared, I'd definitely be interested in ur old amp. As you can probably tell i'm on a cheap budget, is there a price you want for it? i'd be willing to meet up with you.

The sub i have is the JL audio 10". I dont have the full specs but my friend will get that for me tonight, since he had em on a piece of paper just never gave it to me. :P

find an amp with "high-level" inputs. That means you'll be able to tap the signal from your rear speakers and put it directly to the amp. Yes buying a headunit with a sub out will sound 1000x better but if you just want a sub for now, just buy an amp that will support both high and low-level inputs

ever look into a infinity basslink? it has an internal amp and isnt that hard to hook up, it'd be perfect for the fit.

sell the JL sub if the basslink fits you more

you know what? I have no idea. I looked up it's brand "Crunch USA, Power One" but no google results lol... my brother was using this amp plus another one to power two 12" JL Audio W3 subs in his old car... he gave it all to me when he was done with it. I'm using the other amp on my set-up now. Not really much need for the 400w amp

cant go wrong with a Fosgate. I'd take an old fosgate over the Kicker amp I have right now.

You need to let us know what kinda sub you have. Then we can help you find the right type of amp you need b/c there are lots of combinations (2 channel, 4 channel, mono, 2ohm, 4ohm, low pass/high pass filters, remote turn on, etc) so let us know what kinda sub you have. It's probably stamped on the bottom of the subwoofer. Your gonna have to unscrew the subwoofer from the box and give us the specs. OR you can post a pic of it so we can look it up. But other then that, we can't suggest much.
