Thinking of moving to San Diego. Give me the lowdown!

Where are the nice spots to live in that have recently priced apartments? What parts of town should I stay away from? Whats the avg rent for a small single bedroom apt? What are the major companies in town? Any of them IT related?

Thanks!

Mission Valley is pretty much in the center of SD also very nice. Stay away from anywhere south of there. La Jolla is really nice but the apartments are $1500 plus for 1 Bedrooms. Mira Mesa is clean and priced in the middle for san diego just keep your car in the garage around there. They have a lot of nice places here and the weather is great.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like we will be visiting in July to scope out some places. I'll look for apts in the above-mentioned areas. We're looking for a 1 bedroom under $1k/month.

If you are in that price range I would probably recommend checking the La Mesa Area. It's pretty nice in most parts and is about 15 mins from the beach when there is not a ton of traffic on the roads. It's also fairly close to qualcomm stadium and a couple nice shopping malls. Good luck.

Hey fad, when I first moved to San Diego one year ago, I lived in Clairemont, specifically 3332 Clairemont Drive. (Tecelote Canyon area) That area is nice, very close to Mission Bay, and on top of the hill apartments go for about $900/month for a renovated 1 bedroom. Mira Mesa is ok, but farther inland, so the coolness of having the Ocean in your face all the time isn't there. Having palm trees all around you and seeing the Ocean all the time is a major factor for me. For that matter some areas of Pacific Beach will get you into a 1 bedroom for under 1k. But no matter where you end up, make sure you take a look at the place so you know what it is you are getting before you commit to anything. There are some real @$%&holes out here that pass off as living spaces for far too much money.

Ah, thanks for the info! We'll be sure to check out Clairemont when we visit as well as Mission Bay. Hopefully, I can find work close to the area as well. Honestly, I don't mind living farther inland if I can save on rent, be closer to work, and have a safe neighborhood.

So here's the list I have of areas to check out:

Misson Valley
Hillcrest
Ocean Beach

Ocean beach is cool, especially if you have a dog (There's a dog beach there where you can take the leash off and let the little dudes ran until they drop). Robb Field is where most of the San Diego County Soccer League matches are played. OB is more of a Hippie type atmosphere, rent is usually slightly cheaper there compared to Pacific Beach, but Mission Beach is more expensive than both. La Jolla type rents there, and only because of location. Mission Valley is cool, if you like to be right in the thick of the shopping mall/restaurant scene, and Qualcomm Stadium is in that neighborhood, so you would be close to autocross or drag events if you are into that (Not to mention San Diego Charger games and tailgating). Hillcrest is a close-to-downtown neighborhood that is know for having the most homosexual population percentage and has that vibe to it. It does have the best BBQ in the city IMHO right there, called Phil's.

Both my girlfriend and I are dog lovers but never lived in a place that accepts dogs, so we'll definitely dig Ocean Beach. She also prefers art districts similar to Melrose Place in LA or the Haight area in the Bay area. Right now we live in an area with a significant homosexual population. We dig it because our neighbors are nice, but then again we don't see too many rainbow thugs running around robbin people.

Rainbow thugs, that's funny, almost an oxymoron. Yeah, you might want to look into Point Loma too. I should have told you about this before, but www.sdreader.com is probably the best place to look for apartments in SD. Check it out.
