Tire shredded, want to move to 205/50R16 [2015]

Hello!

I have to replace this tire, and want to know if it's safe to switch all my tires to the slightly wider 205/50R16, such as the Conti EXTREMECONTACT DWS 205/50R16, or if you have another suggestion, that would be much appreciated.

I’d like to also know what the benefits would be to going to the slightly wider tire on the factory alloy wheels. if you could share any info that you may get on this subject that would be greatly appreciated. The standard 185 size sidewall does not protrude outword enough to protect the rim from getting scratched from light curb contact and I thought the wider tire might bulge out more so as to protect the wheel edge if you rub up against the curb lightly. The standard tire is also seems to be quite narrow.

You will be fine. Tire manufactures provide recommended rim width range and the Extreme Contact DWS 06 in the 205/50ZR16 lists the range as 5.5"-7.5" with a measured rim width of 6.5". You can use https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.ph...h=6&offset2=53

You should visually verify that there's enough clearance between the tire and strut with your current setup for the additional 10mm of tire. I assume there is but it doesn't hurt to check.

How did the tire get shredded?

I've been running 205/50/16 general altimax rt43 on the stock rims for about 1.5 years and 25k without issue. There is a small increase in the diameter that doesn't affect the Speedo much. The increased width hasn't done much to mpg either.

I just rotated them. They are down to 5/32nd from the initial 10/32nd.This is my commute car so I wanted something with long life and decent handling. It's supposed to get 65k but I'm doubtful. I think I may get 50-55k before having to replace them. Would it but again? Probably but I'll see what else is out there when it the time comes.

the only way i know you can shred a tire is by driving high speed with very little if any air in it, or even low speed thinking its only a mile to an air pump, knowing its low. Do the 205’s bulge the sidewall enough to better protect the rim from curb rash?

Since you live in NC I'm not sure why you're looking at all seasons? Can you get by with Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's? I have them for my summer tires and they seem to be OK for the money.

You guys do realize the thread is nearly 2 years old and the OP hasn't been on here since then?

Euro...205 tires are nearly 8 inches wide, they bulge out on 7" wide tires and for sure on stock. But it doesn't necessarily save you from curb rash if you hit it hard enough. If you're careful enough to avoid that, then it probably doesn't matter how wide/narrow the tires are.

Another thing... for some it's an issue of knowing whether the tire is low... for others, its an issue about actually caring enough to do something about it.

I dunno... I find it a bit pitiful for people to wait for a response from someone that clearly hasn't been on here for a long time.

It's like people waiting at a traffic light... they're waiting for their green, except they'll never get it, because they're sitting facing the wrong way on a one way.

I hope my post about being "super helpful" didnt come across in a negative way. I was only trying to add some humor

I do find it amusing, when people resurrect old threads. On the other hand, its good to promote helpful culture on here, esp with users provide helpful posts/replies or just general participation. (even if he answered a 2+ yr old question)

I replaced my factory tires with 205/50r16 Falkens and have a 25mm rear wheel spacer. Honestly, the car drives noticeably better at 65+mph highway speeds. No more dancing/light feeling on the highway where the rear end felt overly light over bumps and the car feels more planted. I would definitely recommend the wider tire. Some loss of MPG is probable but im short trips on a military base currently and to the kids school with no difference noted, still high 30s mpg.
