2016 Fit EX 6MT Transmission Noise
Good afternoon,
In April I posted a deceleration gear whine issue I am having with my 2016 EX 6MT. I ordered the vehicle in August 2015. It arrived in early December.
To recap: I hear a high pitched gear whine when decelerating in 6th, 5th and 4th gears. No noise at steady speeds or acceleration. I have owned numerous Honda and Acura vehicles, all with manual transmissions. None of those vehicles had a similar transmission noise, including a new 2013 Fit LX 5MT.
The noise didn’t appear until the vehicle had several hundred miles. I was curious to see if it would persist or dissipate with additional miles. It now has 7,000.
I have an appointment with the Honda Factory Rep on 10/17 after a service appointment and drive with the Honda shop foreman at Maita Honda in Sacramento. In preparation, I need feedback from those of you that have a 2015 or 2016 Fit with the 6MT. Does your transmission have any similar noise issues or is it quiet?
I drove a used 2015 6MT with 20,000 miles at a local Honda dealer and the trans was quiet. There are apparently no Honda service bulletins regarding the manual transmission.
I feel very irritated and disappointed at Honda for the inconvenience and hassle I have and will have to go through. The thought of a new replacement transmission from Honda doesn’t sit well with me. I feel replacing a major drive train component will in some way later compromise the integrity of the vehicle. What I want is another new and uncompromised Fit EX 6MT. I believe the only way to do that would be to address the issue with the General Manager at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle. The lemon law does not apply here.
Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated based on previous experiences you may have had with Honda or other brands in general. I am very busy but will read all of your posts.
Thanks in advance!

Ciscofit, is your whine loud enough to record and post?

Interesting! Both of you with 6/5/4 trans decel whine describe exactly what I am hearing. My vehicle was assembled in Celaya, Mexico; transmission was assembled in the Phillippines. Trans info was listed on the new vehicle window sticker. Not sure if that specific info can be determined from some of the VIN numbers.
Buzz & Mel: Do you know where your transmissions were assembled?
My questions are:
Were all 6MT transmissions assembled in the Philippines or elsewhere for 2015 & 2016 model year Fit vehicles?
Where are the 2017 model year 6MT transmissions being assembled. Is there a common noise thread issue with the Phillippine transmissions vs elswhere?
I will record my trans whine and post. Not sure how to do the latter. Suggestions appreciated. The noise is loud enough to be distracting to me and any passengers who have a ear for mechanical noises.
Thanks for your replies.

Maybe it's because your car wasn't built in Mexico. They make fine Fits in Mexico.
I eagerly await to see you get this resolved.

If AC and radio are on, can barely hear whine. Road and wind noise is more pronounced anyways. Really only notice it when coasting down a hill before I pop it into neutral.
Same as MeIR, pitch doesn't change with speed or gear.
Going to ask about it when I get first oil change done.

OK, here's a video link. Shot this on the way to work yesterday AM.
I have a Canadian DX model. Not a lot of soundproofing in this car so the road noise is LOUD. You can still hear the whine above the noise.
In the video you start to hear it at about 20 seconds.(It's loudest at around 60KPH) Then I accelerate slightly and it comes back at about 43 seconds. (No, that is not a plane coming in to land)
You can also see that the weather is getting damn cold. It dropped 2 degrees C in this video alone! lol

I played it 3 times using headphones and frankly I can hardly hear it. It sounds like a very faint high pitched sound as you hit 62kph. It also only seems to sound when you are decelerating. I do hear it clearer from :43-:56. It sounds like the final drive when I decelerate on my Honda motorcycle, sort of like a plane landing.
Sorry, but you'll need to try to reduce the ambient noise level because the high pitched sound is too faint.
I do not have this sound when diving my 2016 Fit DX. There are a couple of us on here, so maybe you should contact them: commanderslug, fred2000.

I heard it in the video and have a very similar sound in the CVT when decelerating as well, particularly around 40 mph. I thought it was pretty normal and haven't thought it was anything abnormal.

Agreed. I'm not convinced its a problem. Oil change coming soon, I'll get an opinion from the dealer. Just wanted to post it for the OP.

That sounds like normal gear whine. Technically its not "gears" with teeth per say but a steel belt with two hydraulic pulleys changing the gear ratio. It could be more pronounced due to the temp, maybe low on tranny oil, but It doesn't sound bad. My 6MT has a gear whine when going in reverse, but thats normal too due to the idler gear. Let us know what the dealership says

UPDATE:
Follow the link to listen to the decal trans whine of my 2016 EX 6MT. Recording was made using a Tascam DR-2d professional audio recorder located on the front of the passenger seat. The whine continues unchanged while decelerating and downshifting through 6th 5th 4th only. No whine from 3rd 2nd 1st or when accelerating or maintaining a constant speed in any gear. I have never heard a Honda manual transmission make this noise, and I have owned many.
What do you think? The ambient sound of the whine is much more evident in the vehicle interior than the recording demonstrates.
My appointment with the Honda Factory Rep is next Monday. I will be discussing your responses in general with that person.

This second recording is so much better.
No, my 6MT does not have this decel whine, but my 500cc shaft drive Honda motorcycle does. My bike's decel sounds like a jet engine to me, and not unpleasant, but maybe I've just gotten used to it, and I wear a helmet with earplugs.
