I'm 100% service connected disabled USN vet and I'm really surprised at how many places and company's give a veteran's discount. I got out in the 1970's and it wasn't until the late 90's I even thought about asking for one. I was paying for some new windows and the cashier seen my ID card in my wallet and took 10% off a $2,000.00 plus bill .I was shocked!

 

Thank you for your service. Since I didn't serve (4F Status from birth defect), I get no discounts, but I am glad that you and others like you do. I just attended Nashville's Operation Stand Down at Centennial Park. Good turn out, civilians and vets.

 

Yes, I agree. But it's shocking how many other businesses, organizations, and just ordinary folks cannot seem to find a way to recognize the sacrifices made by veterans. We gave up everything from a few months of lost income and inconvenience... all the way up to limbs and lives forever lost.

Certainly there are many other ways beyond a "Thank you" and merchandise discounts that would recognize military service.

I was very fortunate to have an experience back in 1966 that taught me something about veterans. I was in uniform, on my only two-day pass during advanced training, and had just arrived at a train station on a very cold day in Chicago---during a time in our country when G.I.s were more reviled rather than appreciated. I had hardly stepped away from the train when a well-dressed businessman said, "I'm a veteran; may I buy you lunch?"

We had a nice conversation over a good meal and he picked up the tab --- but not before telling me that I should think about doing the same good deed years later. (I don't think the expression "paying it forward" had been invented yet.)

During all the years since I returned from Vietnam, I've bought a lot of meals for people I come across wearing a military uniform... and I certainly hope that they went on to "pay it forward" at the appropriate time. I always like the look on their face when the suggestion is made... and you can plainly see that they get it.


People just generally need to create new ways to show that they get it.

And then there's those who carry it back. A friend, a vet of the Italian campaign, wears a WWII cap, not to brag, but to honor his fallen brothers. He goes to a certain restaurant for breakfast several times a week. He's as sharp as a tack and the waitress dote over him at age 94,

Not too long ago, a couple of younger gentlemen saw him, talked with him, and then left. The waitress came over and told him that they had paid for his meal because he was from the same military era as their grandfather.
