Delay Going Into Gear CVT

I've noticed that when I start the car and shift into drive, there's a very noticeable delay before the transmission actually engages. I've never experienced anything like it before. Even my BMW(s) with electronic gear selectors didn't behave in this way. I've also noticed that when I engage reverse, there's a shorter but noticeable delay as well.

Mine has never done that. It's very immediate.

This has actually been discussed before. My CVT has the annoying delay every....single....time! And, yes it is frustrating.

All of the current generation CVTs across the entire car line can have a delay, it's normal.
Our factory rep said it's programmed this way to give the trans time to get fluid pumped up and circulating before allowing it to engage.
(If you dare try it, most of the cars barely allow only minimal throttle response during this 'pre-engagement' time either.)

2-4 seconds sure feels like forever when you're used to how a regular automatic trans engages.

No delay for me. Turn it on, put it in gear and go. Even when starting "cold" in the garage. This will be my first winter so I may let it warm up for about 15 seconds before shifting into D and taking it easy out of the neighborhood/parking lot.

I find that this is associated with initial starting of the engine only. There seems to be some sort of boot process.

Manual transmissions: No computers, no booting, no delay, splash lubrication with no pump. Start the car, 1st gear, release the clutch and go. The only electronic component of a manual is the reverse light switch. :-)

I get it, really I do. I want no part of all the thought that goes into shifting manually. I'd like to keep 2 hands on the steering wheel as much as possible. The GK with it's buttons on the wheel help a great deal there. The computer is supposed to yield better MPG as well. If I'd opted for a manual, I wouldn't have to had settled for the banana. It's growing on me, but it wasn't my first choice by far. I do like the leather though, and am very pleased with the trim level I've chosen.

If the EX-L was available in a 6MT in the states like it is in canada I would have thrown down for it. Fuel milage is important too, but the difference is marginal if the manual is driven properly. Hope you can get to the bottom of your delay issue! Sounds like a software induced delay.

The CVT has been known to get better mileage than what's advertised as well. It's not just the manual that can better its EPA estimations.. In my case, I've consistently been getting between 41-44 MPG on my EX CVT.

Been noticing this delay too, is it safe to give it gas or should we wait the few seconds before trying to accelerate? Coming from my old car I'm so used to just going.

Mash the gas pedal, I think you'll find the computer won't really apply throttle until the trans is ready.

And the clutch ignition "lockout" or whatever you wanna call it (clutch to the floor to start the car)....which, may possibly not be electronic at all, but mechanical...nevermind

my 16' GK does not have this delay... it's engaged pretty immediately.
