Mounting Dashcam
#22
Is there no straightforward way to hardwire a dash cam?
What do people do if their camera had an impact type setting that could record when the car is off? Or are there built in batteries that handle that?
My E46 M3 had a radar detector hardwired into the wiring used for a button used for a garage door opener button near the interior lights (by rear view mirror) that made a hardwire super easy and nifty. Is anything like that possible?

Yes. Purchase an add a fuse kit, connect to the aux fuse panel under the driver side dash, and connect that to a 12v accessory adapter which the cameras adapter connects to. yes the camera has its own batteries but its way too small to last any significant time. That panel is ACC on only, meaning it is only energized with the ignition on.

Sorry, unrelated, but I owned/drove an E46 M3 for about 7 years. Sweet car, bright red convertible, 6mt, 2004my, boy I miss it.

Mine was supercharged with methanol injection and nitrous. Nearly 500 rear wheel horsepower without the nitrous … and now I drive a Fit. Ha!
Man I miss that car! They're crazy cheap now, but you better be prepared to deal with maintenance issues.

Here is a picture of how it looks. Its all hidden under the dash, and the fuse is piggybacked on an ACC ignition on circuit on the AUX fuse panel

Looks good.

The Fit has those black dots on the windshield behind the rear view mirror, so a suction cup won't stick there. Because of that, I mounted my dashcam on the far right side of the dash. It works fine and shows what's up ahead, but the video is upside down, since the camera is mounted upside down from the position it was intended to be in if stuck to the windshield.
How do you mount the camera on the windshield with those black dots? I thought of using Velcro to mount a piece of plexiglass and attaching the suction cup mount to that.

Any of them? So if the slot is occupied I can take that fuse out and add the fuse kit there, and then just put the removed fuse back into one of the add-a-fuse slots and put the 2A fuse for the camera into the other?
I guess what I'm really asking is if there is a maximum rating for a given fuse slot on the aux panel. I know I'm only adding 2amps of draw, but are the slots rated for a certain draw/is it possible to overload individual slots?
I'm stupid
Edit: According to page 425 of the manual, slot 39 is defined as "Option" and rated for 10A. Would that be a suitable place to connect the added fuse?

it is possible to overdraw a single fuse "slot" on the aux panel. The panel itself has a master main fuse at 40A I think. The biggest fuse size is 20A.
Yes slot 389 will be perfect for the camera
For my situation I've added a ton of stuff. Camera, trailer light unit, heated side mirrors which it was meant for but no stock wiring on the EX, and finally the brake controller. Instead of crowding the AUX panel with Add a fuse kits, I got a 6 position AUX fuse panel CONNECTED to the AUX panel of the FIT via TWO add a fuse kits with 20A each for a total of 40A. This prevents overloading a single fuse slot.
The biggest draw on the Aux panel is the brake controller for towing. It needs a 30A fuse. Though I highly doubt I will need that much and it should not go anywhere above 20A.
***Connecting loads directly to the battery means also bypassing the ELD thus why the AUX panel made the most sense to add stuff. Drawing from the AUX panel means the ELD will sense the load an compensate with the alternator demand.

I"m a little late on this thread.... can the dots really be scraped off? I'd love to mount my camera above the mirror. Lots of red light running going on in my town lately.
FWIW, the Mobius action camera is a great cam and if you swap the battery for a super capacitor, it'll last forever in the heat of the summer.

You mount it on the dashboard with this excellent mount I've been using for some 5 years now.

I have a good dash mount, but the video is upside down because the camera is designed to mount on the windshield, so it would be inverted. When the weather gets warmer, I'm going to use the 3M double-sided tape between the windshield and the suction cup.

What camera???
That's what I've been using since March 2010:
Sony HDR-XR100 80GB High Definition Handycam Camcorder HDRXR100
Plus a 32GB memory card and 30mm/37mm Wide-End Conversion Lens - VCLHGE08B Review | Sony Store U.S. - Sony US
Still runs very smoothly.
All the best out there.
