Estimated MPG vs. Actual MPG

My 2010 Fit fuel computer will usually say about 36 but when checking with math gallons/miles is usually 2 mpg less. I only get about 32 to 34. I drive all highway logging 80 miles a day. Speed limits are 60 and 65. This is the 5 speed automatic. I wish it would get more mpg than it does.

I was averaging 44.7 for about 3,000 miles. Then it got cold, and we got the winter mix of gas, and mileage has dropped.

EDIT: From the Fuelly website, look at the choices in the left column. Select Profile. That's where this forum's URL is listed, so you should be able to do it from there.

I usually see consistently higher readings from the car than calculated or Scangauge II. How do you guys get such great average MPG? I like to think I accelerate pretty lightly, and I usually start coasting to all the rural stops signs in my area about 1/4 mi out. Does fuelly have an Android App to log at the pump? I keep everything in Excel, I just started keeping track of the Fits average and comparing that to my Scangauge II, too.

Maybe it's because I'm an old fart, but I've fallen back to just watching the tank level. And I can't break the motorcycle habit of resetting the trip meter every fill-up.
BTW, just got my worst MPG ever, but only paid 87.9¢ a gallon for it--the lowest price so far on the Fit. Gotta love them fuel points!

For 87.9, what were you putting into your tank??? We're paying $2.359 - the lowest available.

I see you have a USB flash drive for music, right? I have a flash drive for music, and it amazes me how that works. It's about the size of a thumb nail, and it hold hours of music. It's so small that I can close the USB cover, and it disappears.

Our motorcycle didn't have a trip meter, I just fill it every hundred miles in the odometer do that way there's always plenty in it, and enough left if I have to go a little further to the nearest station.

Agreed! It's interesting to have a unique set of data on fuel usage to be able to see driving habit changes and changes in fuel, either using a different brand or winter and summer blends. This will the first car I'll be tracking for several years. I first started tracking fuel with our Subaru a few months before it was traded in. I began with the 13 Fit, but it's not my car or daily driver so fuel didn't get written down. My Toyota I had for 15 months or so before it was time to trade it in for the Fit. I got 38 mpg once, driving 60 mph on I-80 with a tail wind. That was pretty exciting for usually getting 29-31 mpg.
I love the Scangauge, and I hope to get fuel calibrated soon too. But with it differing from the car, which is more accurate? One day I'll have to count how many ticks there are on the fuel gauge to estimate how much fuel is left. And compare them. I'd rather not run out of gas.

This to me is one of the best kept secrets in the entire auto industry. I'm convinced the algorithm that does the calculation must only look back at the last 20 miles. I wish they would just come out and tell us that the mpg is based on the last (xx) miles.
I've only bee in one vehicle ever that was accurate. A 2010 Chevy truck with the diesel. It would be to the tenth but I believe it also kept track of fuel to the tenth on the information center. It's been a while so I may be explaining that a little loosely. What I do know is that it was accurate.
