Long road trip report

Long road trip report
My wife and i just drove our new 2015 Fit EX on a 4,300 mile trip from Spokane to Kansas City, MO and back. It included other short trips around Kansas while there. We started December 21 and traveled I90 through Idaho and Montana to Sheridan, WY and then shortly after that hit I25 south through Wyoming to Denver, then across I70 to KC. Here are some highlights of the trip.
We plan on driving to Ohio in June. Look forward to that.
- Got 39.8 MPG on the first leg of the trip (2 days) to Abilene, KS. (1,560 miles) On clear roads we were driving 80-83 MPH, but there were some icy roads in Wyoming where we averaged 45 MPH. We think we had a strong tail wind at times, especially driving south on I25, for about 200 miles.
- It handled well in the snow and on icy roads. Almost no sliding. I had good winter (non-studded tires.)
- Both the heater and the window defrost system, which I had reservations about from a previous trip to Montana, functioned well.
- Loved the lounge seat configuration in which the back seat on the passenger side (See image at http://automobiles.honda.com/images/...es/config4.jpg). This allows for the passenger to view the outside from all side windows as well as the front windsheild. Great view and comfortable with legs elevated.
- On the way back via I25 driving north through Wyoming, the road conditions were great and the weather was clear and the traffic was super light. So I put the cruise on 87 mph and enjoyed the ride until I was stopped and cited by an state patrol officer.
- Had oil changed just before we left. Still have 70% life remaining.
- Love the rear and right side cameras which I find myself relying on more and more.
- This is a much quieter vehicle than my 2010 Honda Fit Sport. We can actually enjoy the music or an audio book most of the time while driving. That didn't happen with the 2010 Fit.
- Over all got 36.5 mpg on the trip of 4,300 miles. We had head winds at times on the return, and I was often cruising at 80+ mph through Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana when roads were clear.
- The Fit has the CVT which I am liking more and more because it seems smoother and more responsive than the automatic on my 2010 Fit.
We plan on driving to Ohio in June. Look forward to that.

Nice, I am enjoying my new FIT in Spokane also. Funny you mention the noise of the 2010.
When we were shopping for my Wife back in 2007-2008 we did not get a fit due to the noise especially in the back from the shock towers. We bought her a 2007 Mazda5 and it has been a great vehicle for here and the kids for almost a 100k of around town hard driving.
I needed a little car his time and I was impressed by the FIT and the reasonable cabin noise.
Cool little car.

I do not get it. I am in Ohio. I am getting around 42 MPG highway driving at 60 MPH. For some reason I get lower MPG(40) on the reverse trip driving home and had to lower my cruise to 55 to obtain that. It is actually downhill driving home, about 702 feet over 17 miles. The car should be broke in. My tires are inflated to 33 PSI.
I am not driving in the mountains. I do not have to hit my brakes for traffic. Five MPH seems to relate to about 2 MPG for my car. Why do I hear all these stories about people cruising at 80 plus MPH getting the same mileage I am getting at 55 MPH. I know you had a tail wind but this is ridiculous.
I am happy with the mileage I am getting but would rather be getting that mileage driving the speed limit or 5 MPH over. That has always been my normal driving pattern but I bought the fit partially for the fuel savings and have changed my habits to get better mileage.
Do I need to take my car in and have it checked?
I do not know your weather but I can definitely tell you the outside temperature makes a difference in my mileage. That is part of the reason I had to drop 5 MPH each direction to maintain the mileage I was getting while it was warmer.

Talked to my wife and she reminded me that the stretch in Wyoming was more like a 45 mpg average due to icy roads and there was a strong tail wind for about 200 miles or so. I've revised my original post.
Don't think there's anything wrong with your Fit. Wind I think affects mpg more than we think.

I bought my 2015 Fit (silver) EX CVT 10 days ago, and then drove ~5200 miles from Indianapolis, IN to Lexington, KY to Knoxville, TN to Brian Head, UT to Austin, TX to Lexington, KY then back to Indianapolis, IN.
Driving out west I faced headwinds and stupid traffic and drivers, as well periods of hard driving and enjoying the paddle shifters, but that was maybe 5% of the trip. I averaged in the high 20's mpg. This was very frustrating.
On the way back however mpg was a different story. With the wind at my back, and in no rush to arrive, and kept the cruise control set to between 2-5mph over the speed limit. I also made sure to raise my cruise control according to changes in the speed limit. 45mph and 55mph zones may be annoying to everyone, but for those few miles you'll save some fuel. My fuel economy for the way back was ~38/39mpg.
I understand that the advertised 40/41mpg is in a lab on level ground, LX model, CVT, no cargo or persons in vehicle, no wind, on rollers with as little friction as possible, and for only a few miles. I get that. So I am happy to get so close to those numbers along interstates 65, 64, 75, 40, 20, 15, 30, 35, and highways 84 and 89.

My wife and son-in-law both make almost the same daily commute. My wife drives 70/72 and
gets 42+ mpg most of the time.
My son-in-law drives 80mph or a bit more and gets 36/37 mpg.
Both driving 2015 EX with CVT
There is something about losing ½ mpg for each mph increase in speed. I do not know where
this starts, 40mph? 50mph? 60mph. We do know that 45mph will give us around 50mpg.
Slow down and save $$$$.
WIND. Blame the damn wind. We live in New Mexico where anything less than a 15mph wind
is considered dead calm. We have seen as much as an 9mpg drop from our average if there
is a strong head wind. But a strong tail wind will not give us 9mpg more. Life ain't fair.
YMMV
