passenger airbag on/off light indicator

passenger airbag on/off light indicator
I have a question about the dash indicator light for the passenger airbag on a new 2015EX Fit. When I first turn the ignition on, the lighted icon says the passenger airbag is off. (No weight in the seat) As soon as I turn the engine on, that light goes off. That indicates that the seat bag is now "ON." even though theres no one in the seat. It seems to me that it should stay off until someone sits there and weighs over 65lbs. I took it the service dept. at Honda and they were of no help in knowing how it's supposed to work. Any one have experience here? Thanks. Great forum.

The light comes on at startup as a bulb check, like all the other little idiot lights scattered around the dashboard.
After that, there are three basic states that the system can have as indicated by the light. When there's no or very little weight on the seat, the airbag is off and the light is off. When there's a moderate amount of weight (several pounds to about 65 ponds), the airbag is disabled and the light is illuminated. When there's even more weight, such as an adult sitting there, the light turns off again and the airbag is active.
Your car is operating normally. As spreadhead said, it's described in detail in the owner's manual.
