I also considered a Mazda 3 earlier but would've been a few more grand for the trim I wanted with less rear passenger/storage room, with a huuuuge front end. Pretty sure my insurance would be higher with the 3 as well. If you value fun-to-drive a lot, though, the 3 is worth a look.

I looked at a Mazda 3 also. For what they wanted for that, I could have bought a new CR-V. That was a deal killer.

The ride is smooth compared to our Prius C. Smooth is relative. A small sporty(ish) hatchback is never going to ride like a sedan. The 15 Fit is very smooth IMO but you will FEEL potholes/speed bumps, and hear them! How smooth you need is really a personal thing, take a test drive.

As far as tires go, I really would like to use my winter tires. So is there any way I can still use 185/65-15?

I owned '02 Civic, so compared to that car you may get slightly 'disappointed' with the the steering as well as the suspension of the new Fit. The 7th gen Civic isn't really refined at all (noisy, etc.) but it has very good steering feel as well as pretty firm suspension that help to navigate corners.

I test drove the '15 Fit last month (ordered one already), and the steering was a bit too light to my taste (it's the electric power steering) & also suspension tuning is a bit softer that you may feel 'floaty' although not as bad as most Toyotas. Cornering works just fine actually, and even it doesn't get understeer as the 02 Civic when you push it hard, but you will feel it as a less 'sporty' car because of the steering feel & softer suspension. Overall, it's much quieter & better ride than the older Civic for sure.

For tires, 185/65R15 maybe too tall, it's already above 3% of the stock size's diameter. http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-...0R15/185-65R15

I am actually planning to get 195/60R15 for winter tires with 6.5" alloys. It's almost the same diameter as the stock Fit EX 185/55R16.
