which would you chose ?

Mazda 5 6MT. Bigger than the Fit and reliable and fun.
Choosing between a Mitsubishi and a Jeep is like choosing between getting shot or stabbed. I'll take an older Wrangler or older Mitsu but don't trust anything new from them.

+1 I went from a 2004 Dodge Ram Quad Cab (15 MPG average) to my 2012 Honda Fit (34 MPG average) and have a 4x8 utility trailer that will haul anything that the truck was able to. If I had a large boat, tractor, camper, etc. to pull it would be a different story, but I don't and the Fit + trailer has been able to handle any hauling needs I've had since selling the truck about a year ago.
The Fit is going to be a lot more fun to drive, easier to park, quicker to wash and clean up, cheaper to maintain, etc. than the other two choices you mentioned as well.

The Mazda 3 does look really nice as well. I looked at the last gen model before buying my Fit and liked everything about it except for the back seat head and leg room. The Fit just has so much more of both in the back seat and having a kid still in a car seat I don't think it would have fit in the Mazda. Hopefully the new 3's have a little more room in the back seat.

Just look for low mileage or certified 2012s or 2013s... they got for like 17k... I just looked in NYC too. If I ended up having to upsize my car that's what i'd be looking at. I mean it's not really a car and it's not really a minivan and it comes in MT. I'm not an SUV person but if I upsized i'd need a third row.
It also has aftermarket suspension goodies if you're into that. Even if I was driving a almost-minivan my inner ricer will never die
Do you have a 'Busa? You could probably put it in the back with all the seats down lol

The main problem with Mitsubishi is that dealers are impossible to find should you need warranty work, and I would be very suspicious of any Mitsubishi's reliability record. If reliability is a factor in your decision, the two vehicles mentioned (Mazda 5 and the Mazda CX5) are the two to look at. The Mazda 5 has been nearly bulletproof since its inception. The CX5 is getting rave reviews. As you mentioned, the 5 gets pretty poor gas mileage compared to the CX5. I would go for the CX5, especially if you are thinking of hauling something with a tow bar. I certainly would not tow anything with a Fit; great way to ruin a great car.
