Surge at start up

Surge at start up
2015 model.
recently noticed that the engine sometimes briefly surges immediately at startup. Instead of a nice, clean sounding startup.....there's a 1 second VROOM before settling down at idle.
I'm not holding the key any longer and foot is off the accelerator.
Anyone else experience this?

I wonder if this is a symptom of the known fuel injector problems in the 2015 model year. I believe avg repair cost is somewhere around $1500-$1700; though some have talked the honda dealership into meeting them halfway (or even covering the replacement).
Is it fine after startup/warmup? It could be something cheaper as well. Honestly your best bet is to probably have a service tech look into it, if it's reproducible.

Injector problems usually manifest as misfires and error codes, not surges at startup. Since the injectors typically fail one at a time, this starts a cascade of increasing misfires. Your engine would not be running normally between startups, it would error. I think the problem lies somewhere else.

I agree with bargainguy. I don't ever recall anyone with fuel injector problems mentioning surges. However the mention of error codes does bring up the issue of whether or not you have an OBD2 scanner, or can borrow one, so that you can check and see if your car has any error codes.

OK, I'll bite. Here are the known problems with the GK5:
1. Injector / rail assembly. TSB on all 2015's and early 2016's, replaced under warranty, but if out of warranty, you're on your own. Suspect design on all GK5 models, I don't think they've fully worked this out yet.
2. Early starter failure. Esp. common in pushbutton start models. Sometimes the switch fails first, sometimes the starter, and fixing one doesn't necessarily fix the other.
3. VTC actuator rattle. Horrible grinding noise at cold startup. Mine does this. Supposedly no adverse effect on engine but some folks here are having theirs replaced, search this subforum for details.
4. Door leaks in the 2018 and later models. Some of these cars are quite soggy.
5. Now we have a fuel pump recall, I believe for 2019 and later. This is quite recent.
These are all the result of forum users reporting their experiences here, except for the fuel pump recall which was just issued. If startup surges were common, we'd have lots of people reporting that experience, and that doesn't seem to be what's happening. So I have no idea where you got your info or how reliable it is, but it doesn't seem to be the case, at least for the GK5.
